Looks like I'm wrong, still not sure they had valves and all, but it appears they were nice instruments even in that time, that were made of metal of different types

.
Numbers 10King James Version (KJV)
10 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.

So..good question.

There are two Hebrew words translated from the Hebrew into English in one word, Trumpet.

The word used in this case means shofar, which is the horn of a ram. These were easy to come by as there were many shepherds.

These differ from the Holy Trumpets made for worship in the Tabernacle.

A typical Rams horn

This kind is used more today, it comes from the animal called a kudu

It is interesting to note that the rams horn actually sounds like a voice.

When God came down upon the mountain it was described as (Ex 19)

And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.
17
And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

All believers should become aware of what it sounds like just as it was sounded in that day of assembly at the mountain it will also be the same sound to call us home.

One of the feasts of the LORD is called the day of blowing and there is a commandment to hear that trumpet (shofar) that day. It is so that once a year that sound can be imprinted on our brains so we recognize it when God calls.

(other name is Rosh Hashanah) :)

I think they were made of both. The horns off animals were common, and the once made of silver were for use in the Temple. I will have to go back and really look at this however, after all I can't make the claim that I know everything.

I love the sound of a Shofar. I have one that was a gift from Israel. I loved it so much that when I went I got one for my grandson. Yes I blow it to open, and close Shabbot. As well as on Rash Hashanah.

Just finished my reading for today and it was about Giddion and how he reduced his army down to 300 men. It then says he equipped these men with 300 trumpets. Where do you think he found those trumpets.

Adams immediate offspring were metalsmiths and instrument makers.
