In another thread I was participating in new age practices were mentioned, to which I asked what their definition of "new age" was. I know we're all very diverse and have very different opinions on things, so I thought this would be an interesting topic. What is your definition of new age practices?

I never liked the term "New Age" a lot of things in new age are really really old, people just use modern words to describe them.
hmmm new age stuff
Feng shui, using the use of crystals and stones to balance your energy, chakras, animal totems/ spirit guieds, a sychronistic view of angels.

A lot more things can be counted as new age, i can not think to list them all lol.
Some Christians just call anything they do not like (for example orthodox christian mysticism) New Age,
what is your view of New Age?

Chakras are definitely NOT "New Age".
Neither is Feng Shui.

They are only considered "new" because Westerners have not been exposed to these practices and others like them before. But they are acually ancient practices, well known to the people of the parts of the world where they originated. It is only the ignorant Westerners who consider them recent developments.

As Rhamiel said, the term "New Age" can be misleading. Most of the beliefs and practices have been around for a long time, they are just "new" to the West.

Some New Age beliefs and practices come from Hinduism, such as karma and reincarnation (mentioned by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad-Gita 5,000 years ago). Chakras and various yoga practices are Hindu concepts - the idea is to awaken the kundalini energy so that it rises through all the chakras to the top of one's head. Both are practiced by New Age practitioners. Astrology originates in ancient India as well.

Feng Shui comes from Taoism. There is a Hindu equivalent as well, whose name I cannot remember at the moment.

Crystals - I don't know much about this. Animal guides/totems seem to be Native American to me.

Other New Age practices include Tarot cards, rune divination, palmistry, numerology, crystal scrying (remember Charmed?), tea leaf reading, and dream interpretation.

While most of the above might not be "new", they are practiced by people who dub themselves "New Age practitioners".

In case nobody noted, the term New Age points to a new age, not new practices.

It refers to the coming Astrological Age of Aquarius, and is an umbrella term encompassing a wide spectrum of diverse world views.

^ This.

It's also been used semi-synonymously with the New Aeon in some circles.

I always thought the Indigo group of people, sounded very new age-y to me. These people are supposed to be more evolved, and have paranormal abilities, are empaths, and feel destined to save the world.

Of course science denies these claims, and sometimes chalks it up to ADD or autism.

true, like I said most "new age" things are not new
what are some other "new age" practices? I just listed some that I could think of.
There is some form of "energy healing" or something called Rakiki or something begining with an "R" i am not sure of the name, it seems to be a variant on the eastern belief of Chakras and it might be new, but I can not even remember the name so don't trust me on it's history or origen lol

What is your definition of new age practices?

An interesting question. MichaelArchangelos has captured lot of the practices of the new age. That is to say

- chakra healing and kundalini rising techniques borrowed from Hinduism;
- therapies such as acupuncture and aromatherapy;
- energy balancing and flow techniques such as Fengi Shui and kinesiology;
- processes and modalities for body balancing such as rolfing, alexander technique, etc;
- use of crystals and minerals for wands, beads, japa and sacred stones and to cultivate a sacred environment;
- numerous modalities for self-understanding, self-awareness, eg, dreams, vision-quests, etc, etc.;
- divination, using objects, cards, runes, trance-mediums, psychics, channelling, and the like (all that short of stuff which against the 4th commandment)

- I don't know where you would put astrology. Western Astrology, (called sidereal) is different to Indian Astrology (called Vedic Astrology) literally, by one house, to put it simply. However, Western Astrology is very popular and most Newspapers, Magazines, Media websites, have an astrology column or page. They have it because people want it. Does this make astrology new age? I don't know, it seems nearly mainstream.

What does that say for astrology? Since we are discussing new age practices (and not whether or not we approve of them or believe in them) I would probably say, there is pop-astrology and serious-astrology, where people use it as a form of self-understanding with regard to the influences in their lives, their challenge points, their learning points, and their awareness of their propensities to action. So there are ways for people to use astrology for a help. In terms of the question, "What do you think are new-age practices?", I would probably put both in as new age practices. With regards to the former, I observe daily the indiscriminate giving over of one's life and decisions to the printed or mimeographed words of an astrologer unknown, without anything much more than simply knowing your sun-house (birth house). "Looking up your stars" has become common place, but what people do with that has elements of the irrational and irresponsible.

In our own culture, it is totally different. Astrology is common, everyday. There are sixteen what you Christians might call "sacramentals" in the life of a Hindu, and astrology has its role and place to play in many of these. Looking for the most auspicious time to commence a project, etc. called (Muhurtam). Above all, arranging marriage by way of synastery in Astrology. Very strong cultural influence in Bharath. (India).

There are also specific "new age practices" for communicating with personal guides or protectors, guardian angels, spirit guide, ascended masters, The Masters, and whatever other names are given to them. Scrying, pulling cards, crystals, dowsing with pendants, and boards are used to communicate by individuals.

That's just some of the things people do which are sometimes called "new-age" practices. :angel:
