....by helping drug addicts, beside feeling good? We now have an epidemic of dangerous heroin use with hundreds dying each month across the country, costing millions that we don't have. Shouldn't we, as a society, just let them reap the fruit of their bad decisions? Of course family and friends can spend their money, time, and emotions if they choose, but why should the nation go bankrupt trying save every lost soul?

Those who struggle with drug addiction often to do not have some sort of moral faulting, but are the victims of a society that treats them as criminals instead of getting them help. There have been studies conducted on rats that showed when rats were put into a little rat town with everything rats could want, and given two sources of water, one laced with some addictive substance and the other just water, the rats with good lives shunned the drug water, they didn't like it. While the rats with more isolated and unhappy lives became heavy users. We saw this same thing happen in the real world. During the Vietnam War, some 20% of U.S. soldiers had become addicted to heroin over there, Time Magazine said it was "as common as chewing gum". This terrified everyone, however, 95% of them simply just stop using it when they returned home. This continues to happen in hospitals and doctors offices around the world every single day, for severe pain, you are given opioids, and yet the vast majority of people are able to be on these medications for long periods of time and never develop an addiction or even withdraws because they are in such a supportive environment.

By choosing not to help anyone eat for instance, something we are commanded to do, can promote laziness in some, while others genuinely need it, so should we stop feeding everyone because a few abuse it? God never said there were any reasons not to help the poor.

And no, food is not the same as heroine, but it could be said we could avoid poverty too had we made all the right decisions, but people mess up sometimes, and especially with things as basic as food and clothing, as well as addiction, certain things need fixing before we can really even begin to get ourselves back on track so we can make right decisions this time around. IOW, all those things can keep us from thinking straight...fix that first so people stand a chance.

If people mess up again and again...7X70.

Helping drug addicts should be a priority. It doesnt matter if we go bankrupt because God will supply our needs. Helping drug addicts helps the whole nation, because drug addiction fuels crime.

What do you recommend we do with those who have addiction problems?

"The fruit of their bad decisions" is crime, and the jails are already filled with them. There is no dearth of letting them "reap the fruit of their bad decisions." Every state does that already.

Apparently lots of families and friends do as well.

What do you want to do with people who have addiction problems?

What would be the cost/benefit to society to continue to solve the problem through correction rather than punishment?

I'm all for a good 'correction' system.

Why don't addicts seek help rather than committing crimes? It seems like a conscious decision to avoid being helped. This defines them as criminals with an addiction.

Jesus asked forgiveness for those who were about to crucify him, but it didn't help them or him.

Why dont smokers stop smoking when the vast majority know the harm they are doing to their bodies?

$170 billion is spent on medical costs related to smoking. What waste, when those people could just die of lung cancer cheaply.
