I thought we could have a thread in which we post some of his quotes that we like, and maybe discuss them if we wish. Here's mine for the day -

"Let God have the sole dominion over you: let Him reign without a rival: let Him possess all your heart, and rule alone. let Him be your one desire, your joy, your love, so that all within you may continually cry out, 'The Lord God omnipotent reigns.'" Selected Discourses upon our Lord's Sermon on the Mount, page 82.

Work Cited:

Wesley, John. The Essential Works of John Wesley. Ed. Alice Russie. Uhrichsville: Barbour, 2011. Print.

I selected this because it seems to explain sanctification so plainly.

I am Pentecostal... Wesleyan Pentecostal... The Wesleyan Methods...

1. Justification - Faith (The bible mentions in several instances... We are justified by faith)
2. Salvation - Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved!
3. Sanctification - The Methodists believed that this came with a sweet spirit
4. The Witness of the Spirit - We Pentecostals would claim this with tongues.

The thing that worries me the most about Pentecostalism these days is that they are forgetting that sanctification comes before the witness. Sanctification is what allows the beauty of the Spirit to shine through an individual. With Sanctification comes love and a sweet spirit.

So here is a definition of sanctification given by John Wesley himself.

http://ucmpage.org/sgca/wesley01.htm

"Entire sanctification is a state of perfect love, righteousness and true holiness which every regenerate believer may obtain by being delivered from the power of sin, by loving God with all the heart, soul, mind and strength, and by loving one's neighbor as one's self. Through faith in Jesus Christ this gracious gift may be received in this life both gradually and instantaneously, and should be sought earnestly by every child of God." - John Wesley

If a person pursues his business in order to raise himself to a state of honor and riches in the world, he is no longer serviing God in his employment and has no more title to a rewad from God than the person who gives alms that he may be seen, or prayer so that he may be heard by men. John Wesley - Discourse 8 upon the Lord's Sermon on the Mount

I like this because often people don't think to view secular stuff like one's job as the place to let one's witness shine. I am not financially minded at all, but I can recognize greed and how destructive it is. But if our businesses are for God's glory, it will help us have better business ethics.

This quote is a timely denominational claim against any side worship of any other god such as humanism as both America and the WP is now being confronted by an aggressive self-serving effort by Satan. Thanks John for speaking to us from the past.church

This Wesleyan quote does not sound like the merits attributed humanism that so many UMC ministers try to mix with Christianity. It is clear that Wesleyan theology is 100% free of humanism. Wesley did not want the church to hold one hand on to God and the other hand to the world.

"Riches, dangerous as they are, do not always drown men in destruction and perdition; but the dsire of riches does. Those who calmly desire and deliberately seek to attain them, whether they do, in fact, gain the world or not, do infallibly lose their own souls. These are they that sell Him who bought them with His blood for a few pieces of gold or silver." Selected Discourses upon our Lord's Sermon on the Mount, page 66.

"Secondly, by doing good, by being in every kind, merciful after their power; as they have opportunity, doing good of every possible sort, and as far as is possible, to all men – to their bodies, of the ability which God giveth, by giving food to the hungry, by clothing the naked, by visiting or helping them that are sick, or in prison"
at Parousianetwork.org

One of the more interesting aspects of Matthew 25, overlooked by those who claim that belief in God/Jesus all that is for salvation, is that Jesus says here that belief in God or himself is neither necessary nor sufficient for salvation.

" And whereas men naturally imagine, that God will excuse their defect in some duties, for their exactness in others; our Lord
ir
next takes care to cut off that vain, though common imagination. He shows, that it is impossible for any sinner
ir
to commute with God; who will not accept one duty for another, nor take a part of obedience for the whole. He warns us, that the performing our duty to God will not excuse us from our duty to our neighbor; that works of piety
ir
, as they are called, will be so far from commending us to God, if we are wanting in charity
ir
, that, on the contrary, that want of charity
ir
will make all those works an abomination to the Lord

I never heard or read of any considerable revival of religion which was not attended with a spirit of reproving. I believe it cannot be otherwise; for what is faith, unless it worketh by love? Thus it was in every part of England when the present revival of religion began about fifty years ago: All the subjects of that revival, --all the Methodists, so called, in every place, were reprovers of outward sin. And, indeed, so are all that, “being justified by faith, have peace with God through Jesus Christ.” Such they are at first; and if they use that precious gift, it will never be taken away. Come, brethren, in the name of God, let us begin again! Rich or poor, let us all arise as one man; and in anywise let every man “rebuke his neighbor, and not suffer sin upon him!” Then shall all Great Britain and Ireland know that we do not “go a warfare at our own cost;” Yea, “God shall bless us, and all the ends of the world shall fear him.”

God gently moves their wills, he draws and woos them, as it were, to walk in the light. He instills into their hearts good desires, though perhaps they know not from whence they come. Thus far, he proceeds with all people, even with those who have not the knowledge of his written word." John Wesley
