“For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it. In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans 8:24-27 NASB’95)

When we believe in Jesus Christ with God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in the Lord, which is not of our own doing, we die with Christ to sin and we are raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to God and to his righteousness. Now we walk by faith in walks of obedience to God’s commands in holy living, by the Spirit. And daily, by the Spirit, we are putting sin to death, and we are following the leading of the Spirit in our lives in what to do and in what to say.

So, by faith in Jesus Christ, we are saved (past), we are being saved (present active) and we will be saved (future) when Jesus returns and he takes his faithful ones to be with him for eternity, which is when our salvation will be completed and our spiritual marriage to Christ consummated. Therefore, salvation from sin is not something that just happens once, done deal, and now heaven is guaranteed us. Our salvation and eternal life with God are contingent on our walks of faith in the Lord.

And this is not “works salvation.” We can do nothing in ourselves to earn or to deserve our own salvation. Even the faith to believe in Jesus is not of our own doing, but it is gifted to us by God, and it is persuaded of God as to his holiness and righteousness, and of our sinfulness, and of God’s requirement that we die with him to sin and we now walk in obedience to his commands, empowered by God, and never of our own flesh. For biblical faith results in walks of obedience to the Lord and the forsaking of our sinful practices.

Now, this does not mean that we are going to be absolutely perfect in every way from that moment forward. We still live in flesh bodies, so we are clay in the Potter’s hands being molded and shaped by God into the likeness of character of Jesus Christ, as we are willing, and as we cooperate with God’s work of grace in our lives in making us more like him. So it is possible that we might sin, but we are delivered by God out of our slavery to sin so we will no longer practice sinning deliberately and habitually.

So, if our faith in Jesus Christ is genuine biblical faith, which involves death to sin and walks of obedience to his commands, the Lord will help us in the areas where we are weak. But, again, we must be willing to change, and we must cooperate with God’s work of grace in our lives in conforming us to his likeness. For his grace, which is bringing us salvation, is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for our Lord’s return.

So, if you are at a loss for words in knowing how to pray about anything in your lives, if your trust in the Lord is genuine, and if your life is committed to the Lord, to follow his lead, the Spirit will intercede for you, according to the will of God, and not according to the will of our human flesh. For God knows the ones who are truly his and who are listening to him and who are following him in obedience. And he knows who the fakers are who are just putting on a performance but whose hearts are not surrendered to Jesus.

And the Scriptures teach us that if sin is our practice, and if walks of obedience to our Lord and to his commands are not what we practice, if we continue on that course, and if we do not genuinely repent and turn away from our sins, and now follow Jesus in obedience, then we don’t have salvation from sin nor the hope of eternal life with God. For we do not even know God, the Bible teaches. So it is not enough to just make a profession of faith in Jesus, but we have to walk in that faith until the end of time.

For Our Nation

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.

Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.

Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.

Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
