We Christians believe in a Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, the Spirit is not the Father yet the three are One.
Jesus existed before creation. He came into the world and thus became man, without ceasing to be God.

Yes but why did he cry out to god as his last words on the cross?

But why did he cry out to god as his last words on the cross?

He was quoting Psalm 22 "My God, my God, why have You abandoned me..."
If you ask why God the Father abandoned Jesus on the cross, the answer is for your salvation.

I am a bit confused, some people claim Jesus was god himself, yet his last words on the cross was something like ohh father why have you forsaken me. ? Am I missing something here?
Yes, you are missing something. Read Psalm 22
Jesus was quoting the opening line of the Psalm, and if you continue reading the Psalm to the end you will understand that Jesus was not crying out in despair, but bringing to mind a prophesy made by King David regarding the Messiah. Ultimately it is a Psalm of victory.

I believe Isaiah makes clear who Jesus Christ of Nazareth is.

Isaiah 9:6 states: "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

The beginning verse in Psalm 22 was spoken by Jesus Christ of Nazareth in order to make known to those who have ears to hear that it had been fully fulfilled . We should remember that the Psalms served as the living heartbeat of Israelite worship. They were not merely religious texts, but the very language through which individuals and the entire community poured out their souls to God, encompassing every human emotion from fervent praise and thanksgiving to raw lament, desperate petition, and unwavering trust.
Blessings

Hi Stephen. Could you perhaps explain a little more why you think that Jesus' last words on the cross infer a lack of divine nature in Jesus?

I'm not clear why it would follow from that premise.

Well I don't understand why he cried out to god if he was a form of God. I think he was divine but became a god after he died. He is the son of god. Not God himself? And on earth he was the son of God and the son of man , both one and the same.

I get your question. I'm going to lean in the direction of assuming that there are various exegetical and hermeneutical contexts that should prevent us from interpreting either Mark 15:34 or Matthew 27:46 in isolation. In keeping with this awareness of multiple contexts, we'd likely see that the writers, Mark and Matthew, were demonstrating that Jesus was fulfilling His Divine mission in association with having already "come down from Heaven with the Father" in order to do so. And if He already came down from Heaven, and He wasn't merely an angel, then we'd infer that Jesus was (and is) divine in nature prior to His ascent to the Cross.

What do you think about that suggestion?

Read John 17. God the Father and Jesus are distinct but One

Here's why I read the Bible and go to church. Simply out of respect for Jesus and his commitment to humanity and simply to realise that living Jesus truths will make you a better person.
Hello Stephen, the Lord Jesus certainly deserves your respect, and while it's true that living out the truths that He taught us in the Bible will likely make you a better person (in the here and now), surely there must be more of a reason than that to explain why He chose to come here and not only walk among us and teach us, but die on the Cross for us, as well, yes?

Here are a few verses and passages from the Bible that should find useful concerning this (from both the Old Testament and the New): Isaiah 53:5-6; Matthew 1:21; John 1:1-4, 14 (the "Word" in John 1 refers to Jesus); John 3:16, 5:24; Romans 3:23, 5:8-10; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 2:5-8;1 Peter 2:24-25.

As far as the nature of the Trinitarian Godhead goes, it is a Biblical mystery, one that cannot be fully comprehended by us (at least not on this side of the grave), but one that we believe is, nevertheless, true (because the Bible tells us that it is). The Trinity is defined as One God or Divine Being who exists both from and to everlasting as Three Divine Persons or Individuals, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit .. e.g. Matthew 28:19.

For additional information on this, please read the four, short historic creeds (particularly the last three) that I've linked below, as these lay out what the church (in general) believes about the Trinitarian nature of the Godhead, and the dual Divine/human nature of the incarnate and now risen Son, the Lord Jesus Christ (rather than referring to a particular church, the word "catholic" in these creeds means "universal", just FYI).

God bless you!!

--David
p.s. - as a direct answer to your thread title, yes, Jesus was God (He always was, and He always will be), though at the Incarnation, a second, human nature was added to His Divine nature, and that is how He still exists today in Heaven.
