You dont have to get a 'feeling' everytime you speak in tongues.
if you have asked God and have faith, then step out in faith.
However I never felt like i was saying 'random nonsense' when speaking in tongues, so it has to hold a real meaning for you.

Yay but are syllables supposed to pop into my head then I say them or just start speaking random words?

I asked God to speak through me when I pray and to help me step out in faith. I started speaking just random syllables but I didnt get a feeling and I felt like i was just repeating random nonsense. Help?

If you will, allow me to make a suggestion. Don't worry about tongues, or to state it more clearly, don't put your focus on it.

The important thing to remember is that the Holy Spirit resides in you as a believer. Focus on deepening the knowledge of God's love for you (AKA be continually filled more and more with the Spirit).

Its ok to seek for gifts. The Bible even tells us to covet the best gifts. In the end though it is the love relationship you have with God that is central and everything else revolves around.

In summary. If you can take your mind off of it, don't worry about it. If you feel uncertain, ask the Lord to lead you and trust that He will. If you then feel led to pray in tongues, do so. If not, don't worry about it. The important thing is the love relationship between you and God.

Hope that helps,

Blessings

If I ask God for something, does He answer it???

And then the next question might be "If I ask God for something, when should I expect the answer?"

God is the Great I AM! If I ask Him something, and believe, should I have it? Of course I should, but do I believe it?

Ok - we see a testimony where someone asks the Great I Am to speak through him and to help him step out in faith. So what was the testimony? Well - the person started speaking what sounded like random syllables, and him did get a feeling. HA - Of COURSE THAT IS GOD! Don't you see - It was exactly what was asked for!!!

God spoke through the person, and because it sounded like random syllables (not coherant statements) and because there were no extrodinary feeling (the glory of God) with it, it require at step of faith to believe it!

Now if the person had just asked that God just speak through him, perhaps God would have given them the glory of God so that he would not have had to step out in faith, but that was not what was asked for!

In a nut shell - You asked the Great I AM, He answered and exactly what you asked for. So He spoke through you and it indeed required a step of faith. Still like John the Baptist, who baptize Jesus Christ, saw the Spirit desend upon Him, and proclaim Jesus to the crowd, but still later sent to inquiry if He was indeed who they were supposed to be looking for, you too have come to wonder about it. That is how we are. We are men of little faith. We ask, we see God answer, then we wonder if it was really Him. Yeah-- It was really Him!!! :p

Just keep seeking God and loving Him.
then maybe sometime when you are praying or praising God for all the majesty of who He is you will just probably end up praising God in a different language and not even realise because you are worshipping God anyway and the words you have are not enough so God's Holy Spirit will give you words to praise Him.

It is more important to love and enjoy and listen to God and read His word and seek to follow Him in everyday things than to speak in tongues because at the end of the day it is your relationship to God and hanging out with God, serving God that matters most. Building relationship with God and seeking God with all your heart is when God is found by us. in the process of doing that is when if its going to happen tongues will happen.

i used to speak in tongues then God showed up and freed me from some other stuff and after that i didnt speak in tongues anymore, not saying its wrong to speak in tongues but it certainly isnt necessary to have a deep and real relationship with Him.

seek God and getting to know Him more anyway, forget about seeking after tongues as a focus... and if tongues happens cool, if not cool because you'll be getting to know God better anyway which is what it's all about :)

The words should well up from your spirit. You don't just start speaking random nonsense. You may to have the baptism of the Holy Spirit before tongues will manifest.

Only once in my life have I ever laid hands on someone to give that baptism. Afterwards I asked her if she had anything welling up in her spirit to speak and out came tongues. It shocked her. She didn't even know what tongues were. She had just gotten saved about 5 minutes before and had no knowledge of tongues. What came out of her mouth sounded like a form of Chinese. It wasn't random nonsense. It was a language she had no knowledge of. The next utterance out of her mouth that welled up in her spirit was a prophetic word that shocked her even more. She was given both gifts.

Many people try to force the gift and that is when they get random nonsense. It is easy to discern the difference if you have the gift of discernment of spirits. There is no meaning to or power behind just speaking out if it is not led by the Holy Spirit. It is surrendering your tongue over to the Holy Spirit. The same is true of the gift of prophecy. At times it can well up so strong that it pushes to be spoken. I didn't want to say the words in my sig to the girl it was meant for. I had just chewed her out for the evil she was doing. I certainly didn't want to call her 'My precious daughter' and those were the only words I was given to start with. I had to yield my tongue and speak them before the next line came to me. That prophetic word was the reason that other girl got saved and asked me to baptise her. I offered her the baptism of the Spirit. She got it, spoke in tongues then prophesied herself.

Usually He doesn't make our mouths or tongues move. Just like with other Scriptures - we take every thought captive and we renew our minds with His word. Once we become believers, usually we don't automatically know lots of Scriptures and have an understanding of them (II Cor 10:5; Rom 12:2; John 16:13). Of course, we have to have His overwhelming help.

Oh, I think He did 'take over your tongue'.

That is what you asked, or do you just always go around making strange noises?

The closer I get to the Lord, the more I realize that He is involved in things. It is written that with His hands He hold all things together.

So the problem is not that He is not involved, the problem is that people don't believe in Him, so they don't believe that He is involved. And so as men of little faith, we only slightly believe that He is involve, and as our faith grows so does our understanding that He is involved.

Of course He is not the only one involved, but He is involved. If I ask for a step of faith, and not just Him to speak through me, then a step of faith is going to be needed!!!

We need to go forward, believing God for more!

It's not that He is not doing more than we know. He is. It's that we need to believe He is doing more that we know. Does that make sense?

"I asked God to speak through me when I pray and to help me step out in faith."

so FAR SO GOOD -

"I started speaking just random syllables"

Why did you do that??? Did somebody tell you to??

There is a heresy, that you need to "Prime the pump" to get "tongues started", but that's foolishness and almost a guarantee that you WON'T actually speak in tongues.

Until you receive the ability to speak in a tongue (which will just come into your mind, and "flow" when you speak it), there's no need to say or DO anything.

"but I didnt get a feeling"

I didn't get any "Feeling either".

"and I felt like i was just repeating random nonsense."

If YOU were making up what you were saying, then there's no "Tongues" in sight.

Just to add to what some have said as well, and sharing some of my own experience as well.

Words dont have to pop in your head, sometimes they do, but you just speak it with faith. The reason i said it never felt like random nonsense was I always felt prompted to speak in tongues most times I did. And when I spoke in tongues, the words just flowed, so i didnt have to think of it or ramble incoherently.

Sometimes, you just start speaking in tongues. You may not get any feelings at the start but if you continue to do so, non stop for over 20-30mins, something will change. Your tongues will be different to how you started and you will feel the power of the Holy Spirit very evidently. He takes over eventually, not that He is not there to begin with.

One night after dinner whilst doing the dishes, I just felt the prompt to start speaking in tongues, and i was doing so, on and on and on until i finished the dishes and sat to watch tv, i didnt stop speaking in tongues (and didnt watch the tv), and kept going...i would say well over 40mins or nearly an hr if not more....then something changed and i got up and started passionately praying in the Spirit and i felt the very presence of God right in my living room in front of me.

It was so powerful i cant explain it. But i do know that Tongues is very essential in our walk with Christ and mighty things happen through speaking it.

Dont worry about how you go at the beginning, just keep going since you have asked The Lord, He will take care of the rest. There are tongues as our prayer language for ourselves, and there are tongues and its interpretations for the edification of the body of Christ at church.

The latter when it came on me at church was the Holy Spirit taking over my body and tongues and speaking through me for the church so it was very very different to the usual tongues that I speak at home everyday.

There are times God wants to do something for you or for someone else through you, and will prompt you to speak in tongues. He may not want you to know what it is, but you will eventually know or realise this is what it was intended for, if God wills.

Keep going. God loves to give good gifts to His children, do not stop desiring His gifts as well Ok?

If there is someone with you who would have discernment the gift of tongues can be tested for authenticity.

1 John 4: 1-3

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.

I can't post links yet. For details google:

And OP, dont worry about going to others to help you test your tongues. STRONGLY believe in JESUS Christ. Stay away from people who advertise testing of tongues and other things. You can test things by God on your own for you have the Spirit of God in you.
Remain firm in your belief in God, and nothing will shake you. And keep desiring His gifts
God bless

Can I ask why you give this advice? FWIW, I am not associated in any way with the information that I linked. (If I remember correctly, there is no advertising involved.)

We are told to test every spirit. I agree that it can be done with other believers who have discernment.

I had tongues tested through a free deliverance ministry. I know of another person who through testing found they had a false tongue.
