I'm looking for recipes for desserts which use a boxed cake mix.

Bake a regular white cake from a box (9x13 pan)
When it's done, (and cooled a bit!) poke holes in it with your finger (kids love this part... just make sure the fingers are freshly washed!)
Kids fingers are actually better for this, cuz they're smaller. If you're doing it yourself, use your baby finger.
Mix up a box of your favourite jello variety (use the icecube method if you can). Pour a bit in each hole (ideally, to fill the hole, but the jello soaks in so don't keep pouring. Just fill the hole once.)
Chill cake in fridge for several hours before serving (ie. until jello is set)
For Christmas, you could use green and red jello, alternating holes. Red is nice for Valentine's day, Green for St. Patty's, etc.
Serve with a squirt of whipped topping from a can- looks real prettyand it's tasty!

Maeyken, I made this Sunday for a dinner. My 14 year old came up with a great name for it - "Fungus Cake"! I'm going to make it again for our church Easter egg hunt using green jello and spread Cool Whip on top and toss some green gum drops on top.
Maeyken said:lol @ fungus cake! kids will come up with "wonderful" names for food! (I'm guessing you used green jello?)

kleptobismol said:i came up with this idea when i was given the responsibility of making my lil bro a super cake for his birthday. i ended up making two 3 layer cakes that ended up looking fantastically gorgeous and tasted as good as they looked!
neopolitan cake:
Ingredients:
1 box white cake mix
1 box strawberry cake mix
1 box chocolate (german tastes best) cake mix
1 can white frosting
1 can strawberry frosting
1 can chocolate frosting
follow instructions to bake six 8" or 9" rounds (you will have 2 white, 2 chocolate, and 2 strawberry cakes). spread frosting in between cakes and you end up with two 3 layer cakes. this is the order i did my cake in but you can do whatever:

cut a slice out of cake and serve. its pretty impressive and we got quite a few compliments off it, and later entered it into a recipe contest and won first place!
