Here in Baltimore, we’re on track to have fewer than 200 murders for the first time since 2011.

The new numbers show violent crime from January to March dropped 15.2% compared to the same period in 2023, while murders fell 26.4% and reported rapes decreased by 25.7%. Aggravated assaults decreased during that period when compared to last year by 12.5%, according to the data, while robberies fell 17.8%.
This is awesome. :) Hopefully crime continues to drop over the rest of this decade, ideally to a crime rate of 0 crimes per 100,000 people, or as close as feasibly possible.

This chart has old data, but shows how the crime rates in the US are lower compared to most of the Western world, except pretty much all of the European continent.

Some good news out of America!

These are spectacular figures and apparently a continuation of a trend. Crime in the advanced countries has been in decline since about 1994-5, the peak of what used to be called a 'crime wave'. It was widespread and remarkably uniform across the advanced economies.

(Hard to prove any causal link: it more or less coincided with the banning of the additive tetra-ethyl lead from petrol.)

Agreed. 1995 also coincided with the internet, so maybe people are more inclined to stay at home, instead of commit crimes, however, some say that cybercrime has increased while violent crime has decreased. Though, the lead in gasoline was harmful for people. Glad leaded gas is banned before I was born.
