While Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott is pleased with the 36% drop in homicides this year compared to the same time in 2023, he said the city still has much work ahead to reduce violent crime.

This is awesome. Hopefully crime continues to drop over the rest of this decade, ideally to a crime rate of 0 crimes per 100,000 people, or as close as feasibly possible.

This chart has old data, but shows how the crime rates in the US are lower compared to most of the Western world, except pretty much all of the European continent.

These are spectacular figures and apparently a continuation of a trend. Crime in the advanced countries has been in decline since about 1994-5, the peak of what used to be called a 'crime wave'. It was widespread and remarkably uniform across the advanced economies.

(Hard to prove any causal link: it more or less coincided with the banning of the additive tetra-ethyl lead from petrol.)

Agreed. 1995 also coincided with the internet, so maybe people are more inclined to stay at home, instead of commit crimes, however, some say that cybercrime has increased while violent crime has decreased. Though, the lead in gasoline was harmful for people. Glad leaded gas is banned before I was born.
