What are we talking here? A phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range?

They have access to weapons "beyond even military scope" but they're coming to America from the pits of poverty and oppression in their own countries to find a better life?

Newsweek emailed Trump's campaign to ask whether he believes that such weapons "beyond even military scope" should be restricted, but did not receive a response by time of publication.
Great follow-up question!

Venezuelan gang members look to be brandishing AK47's. Those are illegal unless registered before 1984.
Newsweek seems to be increasingly "making points" instead of reporting the news.
If I know about Kalashnikovs, which are cheap and plentiful in many impoverished countries, it would seem the reporters for News Week could easily answer their own "gotcha" questions.
"Tommy Guns" have been restricted since the 1930's and no, you may not have a grenade or a rocket launcher.

Has the military heard of these "grenades" you mentioned?

Yes, and no you may not have one.
AK47, M16 and other military grade weapons are restricted and have been for many years.
News Week should have investigated the armament of the Venezuelan gangs in CO and IL before asking inane questions easily verifiable and answered by themselves with a modest amount of research
Venezuela has been producing and distributing AK47's to irregular militias since 2012. There are many in circulation in that area due to the recent conflict with Columbia. Those weapons also proliferate in other areas of armed conflict, primarily in Africa.
Those are restricted and are obviously being smuggled into the US.

So the government does have them and all the other weaponry Trump referred to in his claim?

Our government does not have Kalashnikovs. We have M16's.
If you are trying to make the point that "weapons beyond military scope" would be something beyond our military, it depends on what weapons were being discussed. Some weapons are banned by International Law. There have been some instances, especially after 9/11 where chemical or biological weapons were reported to have been used.
Our military does not have AK47's.
And if those are being smuggled, then, yes, grenades could be easily brought across the border.

I don't quite understand your comment.
I understood Trump's comment as being "beyond the bounds of civilian armament" therefore beyond the scope of civilian and into the realm of military which AK47s are. Scope would be a boundary on this side, civilian/military, not a boundary on the other side military/star wars as some have suggested.

There are rumors of some weapons being developed, lasers and what not but that is not something I have any real interest in.

In another aspect:
Those exploding pagers were both beyond our military scope and also within... possibly.
No one is certain how that was done. We might could do that but haven't done so. Don't know

I believe the quote from Trump in the op is "beyond even military scope".

He may have been referring to aliens from outer space. :)

Our military also does not have muskets, slings or crossbows! Beyond means exceeding, not just outside of.

And you can bet our military has AK47's. Just because something is not standard issue does not mean we don't have it.

There's a recent report about the growing tension between Venezuelan and local gangs in our city. The piece included former and active members who spoke candidly about the problem. They acknowledged the severity of violence and likened them to MS-13. Crime is rising and a standoff is imminent and they're admitting that.

It isn't a hoax. Gang members crossed the border.
