I believe the verse is in Matthew 6 where Jesus is instructing everyone on the proper way to tithe and pray. He also explains this in Mark 12:42 and Luke 21:3 using the poor widow as an example. She gave all she had and did it quietly.

By boasting and showing off we put the attention or focus on us. As Christians we want the focus to be on Christ.

In His service,
Dave

I think you are referring to Matthew 6:1-3
NIV
"Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then you Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

"He said also to the man who had invited him, 'When you give a dinner or a banquet,
do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors,
lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast,
invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed,
because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.'"
(Luke 14:12-14)
