The writings of Josephus found below prove that the area now known as the "Temple Mount" is the remains of Roman Fort Antonia.

Fort Antonia (Herod’s Praetorium, Acts 23:35) was built by Herod and given to the Romans. It was used to house the thousands of Roman soldiers needed to police the ancient city of Jerusalem.

During 73 AD the Jewish leader at Masada said the only thing left of Jerusalem was that which belonged to the Romans.

Mar 15:16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.

Act_23:35 he said, "I will hear you when your accusers also have come." And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's Praetorium.

The following comes from Wars of the Jews, by Flavius Josephus, Book 5, Chapter 5, Section 8.

“8. Now as to the tower of Antonia, it was situated at the corner of two cloisters of the court of the temple; of that on the west, and that on the north; it was erected upon a rock of fifty cubits in height, and was on a great precipice; it was the work of king Herod, wherein he demonstrated his natural magnanimity. In the first place, the rock itself was covered over with smooth pieces of stone, from its foundation, both for ornament, and that any one who would either try to get up or to go down it might not be able to hold his feet upon it. Next to this, and before you come to the edifice of the tower itself, there was a wall three cubits high; but within that wall all the space of the tower of Antonia itself was built upon, to the height of forty cubits. The inward parts had the largeness and form of a palace, it being parted into all kinds of rooms and other conveniences, such as courts, and places for bathing, and broad spaces for camps; insomuch that, by having all conveniences that cities wanted, it might seem to be composed of several cities, but by its magnificence it seemed a palace. And as the entire structure resembled that of a tower, it contained also four other distinct towers at its four corners; whereof the others were but fifty cubits high; whereas that which lay upon the southeast corner was seventy cubits high, that from thence the whole temple might be viewed; but on the corner where it joined to the two cloisters of the temple, it had passages down to them both, through which the guard (for there always lay in this tower a Roman legion) went several ways among the cloisters, with their arms, on the Jewish festivals, in order to watch the people, that they might not there attempt to make any innovations; for the temple was a fortress that guarded the city, as was the tower of Antonia a guard to the temple; and in that tower were the guards of those three (14). There was also a peculiar fortress belonging to the upper city, which was Herod’s palace; but for the hill Bezetha, it was divided from the tower Antonia, as we have already told you; and as that hill on which the tower of Antonia stood was the highest of these three, so did it adjoin to the new city, and was the only place that hindered the sight of the temple on the north. And this shall suffice at present to have spoken about the city and the walls about it, because I have proposed to myself to make a more accurate description of it elsewhere.”

………………………………………………………………

The Jewish historian Josephus said Fort Antonia was built upon a gigantic rock, on the highest hill, and had passages that went “down” to the temple. We also know based on Acts 21:31-40 that Fort Antonia (Herod’s Praetorium, Acts 23:35) was above the temple. Josephus described it as a large structure which contained “baths”, and “spaces for camps”, and all of the conveniences of a city, instead of what we find in Avi Yonah’s modern model of the fort.
Josephus also said the fort blocked the view of the temple on the north side.

In the passage below we find the Romans used Fort Antonia as the base to attack the temple during 70 AD.

The passage proves at least part of Fort Antonia remained intact on the day the Jewish temple was destroyed.

From War of the Jews, by Josephus, Book 6, Chapter 4, sections 4-5.

“4. Now it is true that on this day the Jews were so weary, and under such consternation, that they refrained from any attacks. But on the next day they gathered their whole force together, and ran upon those that guarded the outward court of the temple very boldly, through the east gate, and this about the second hour of the day. These guards received that their attack with great bravery, and by covering themselves with their shields before, as if it were with a wall, they drew their squadron close together; yet was it evident that they could not abide there very long, but would be overborne by the multitude of those that sallied out upon them, and by the heat of their passion. However, Caesar seeing, from the tower of Antonia, that this squadron was likely to give way, he sent some chosen horsemen to support them. Hereupon the Jews found themselves not able to sustain their onset, and upon the slaughter of those in the forefront, many of the rest were put to flight. But as the Romans were going off, the Jews turned upon them, and fought them; and as those Romans came back upon them, they retreated again, until about the fifth hour of the day they were overborne, and shut themselves up in the inner [court of the] temple.

5. So Titus retired into the tower of Antonia, and resolved to storm the temple the next day, early in the morning, with his whole army, and to encamp round about the holy house. But as for that house, God had, for certain, long ago doomed it to the fire; and now that fatal day was come, according to the revolution of ages; it was the tenth day of the month Lous, [Ab,] upon which it was formerly burnt by the king of Babylon; although these flames took their rise from the Jews themselves, and were occasioned by them; for upon Titus’s retiring, the seditious lay still for a little while, and then attacked the Romans again, when those that guarded the holy house fought with those that quenched the fire that was burning the inner [court of the] temple; but these Romans put the Jews to flight, and proceeded as far as the holy house itself. At which time one of the soldiers, without staying for any orders, and without any concern or dread upon him at so great an undertaking, and being hurried on by a certain divine fury, snatched somewhat out of the materials that were on fire, and being lifted up by another soldier, he set fire to a golden window, through which there was a passage to the rooms that were round about the holy house, on the north side of it. As the flames went upward, the Jews made a great clamor, such as so mighty an affliction required, and ran together to prevent it; and now they spared not their lives any longer, nor suffered any thing to restrain their force, since that holy house was perishing, for whose sake it was that they kept such a guard about it.”

All of this provides tremendous evidence that the Dome of the Rock is the true location of Fort Antonia.

I've seen this a few times, apparently the Temple didn't sit on the hill, a fort did. All this talk about building another Temple, they could do it with a tent and it doesn't even have to be in Jerusalem. An interesting OP, I wasn't aware of the Josephus quote but it looks about right to me. The Wailing Wall isn't the Temple, it's the remains of a fort, of course you would put that at the top of the hill.

Great thread and info on Fort Antonia.
It is also interesting to note the Kidron Valley between the Temple Mount and Mount of Olives, [where Jesus gave is 70ad Olivet Discourse regarding the Temple].

Titus and his 10th Legion camped on it and thus could see the Temple across the Valley which was also next to the Valley of Hinnon..[I believe the 70ad event is the Armageddon and "supper of the great God" in Revelation.......[see maps below.

Fort Antonia, Josephus, a ContradictionCommentary for January 1, 2017 — Can Josephus’ Statements be Reconciled?
After you read the “January 2017 Newsletter,” I know you will enjoy reading and listening tothe article, “Gihon Temple Evidence: Jeff Rense Interview of Ernest Martin.” It is a lively dis-cussion about the true location of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, made after the book.

Now to the title of this article. The Jewish historian Josephus wrote about Fort Antonia and its physical relation to the Temple of God in Jerusalem — it was north of the Temple. Dr. Ernest Martin’s research on the location of the Temple1 led him to conclude that the traditional, so-called “Temple Mount” (the Harem esh-Sharif) is actually the remains of Fort Antonia.

Josephus makes two statements about Antonia that seem to contradict one another.
First: “Titus gave orders to his soldiers that were with him to dig up the foundationsof the tower of Antonia, ... Then, days later, ... the rest of the Roman army had, in seven days’ time, overthrown[some]2foundations of the tower of Antonia, and had made a ready and broad way to the temple.” •Josephus, Wars of the Jews 6.93, 149, Whiston TranslationEleazar son of Yair, the leader of the Zealots at the desert fortress of Masada also tells of the destruction of Jerusalem. Second citation: “Where is this city that was believed to have God himself inhabiting therein? It [all Jerusalem] is now demolished to the very foundations; and has nothing but that monument of it preserved. I mean the camp of those who has destroyed it, which still dwells upon its ruins.” •Josephus, Wars of the Jews 7.376, Whiston Translation[the words in brackets are mine]

•The first quotes say the Romans “dug up the foundations” and had “overthrown foundations” of Antonia. •

The second quote says “the camp” of the conquerors, meaning Fort Antonia,3was the only recognizable feature of Jerusalem that continued to exist.4So, were the foundations dug up and overthrown, and Antonia recognizable as the Roman camp?
Actually, both events happened — if you understand the correct location of Antonia. Compare the diagrams at the top of the next page.
[1 The Temples That Jerusalem Forgot (2000). 2 The word “some” in brackets is Whiston’s addition.3 Fort Antonia was long occupied by the Romans until the outbreak of the Jewish rebellion in 66 AD. 4 The rest of Jerusalem was leveled to the ground as Jesus prophesied (Luke 19:41–44), and Josephus confirmed (Wars 6.413, 7.1–3). Three towers were allowed to remain at first, but later demolished.]

Competing Theories of Temple-Antonia Location

The traditional theory (the left illustration) is that the Temple was located on the so-called“Temple Mount,” while Fort Antonia was a small structure on the northwest corner of the pre-sent day Harem esh-Sharif. This is unlikely however because Josephus tells us that Fort An-tonia, particularly on the Jewish feasts, contained an entire legion at full strength:“... for a Roman legion [tagma, in Latin] was permanently quartered there, and at the festivals took up positions in arms around the porticoes to watch the peo-ple and repress any insurrection movement.”This is roughly 5,400 men (Wars of the Jews 5.244) with perhaps 4,000 more people who provided goods and services to the Roman troops.
Compare it with the illustration on the right.
That Fort Antonia is much larger than the Tem-ple rather than smaller. It could easily hide the view of the Temple from the north (the right side of the diagram, Wars of the Jews 5.238, 246), and it certainly appears capable in size and structure to accommodate several thousand people (Wars of the Jews 5.240–242).

Of course, there is much more convincing evidence in Dr. Martin’s Temples book than comparing the Antonia mentioned in Josephus. Nevertheless, once you begin to look at the so-called “Temple Mount” as being Fort Antonia, it will be difficult for you to change back. When viewed from the Mount of Olives across the Kidron Valley, the “Temple Mount” looks like a fortress because it was designed to overawe everyone who saw it. The massive Antonia fortress overlooked and protected the stunningly beautiful Temple to the south. The Solution Both statements about Fort Antonia are true.

The foundations were dug up and overthrown, the buildings on the platform were destroyed, and the corner towers on Antonia, and the stones on the walls have decidedly two parts.
First, the stones below the surface of the Harem esh–Sharif are massive with carved ridges in them, somehow moved into place where they remain to this day. Second, are the layers of stones above surface level. The stones are smaller, haphazardly placed when the Ottoman Turks rebuilt the walls in 1535 AD. That material was used for ramps to attack the Temple from Antonia.

And there is this thread showing a photo of the future temple standing right up beside the gold Dome.
[Weird. The 3 pictures appear to show up only when you hit "reply" to the OP post]

The 3rd Temple shall be built beside Dome of the Rock
Rev 11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
2 But the COURT which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles:

The dome of the rock is exactly located at the COURT and will not be removed due to the threats from Arab world so the 3rd Temple shall be built side by side as the symbol of fake peace by antichrist.
Isnt it amazing that Apostle John has seen it 2000 years ago ?

And i suspect Jerusalem shall be made an int'l city so the antichrist can rule the world from it.
Rev 11:2 ..and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

The nations will rage against Trump's recognition on Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, what will happen that Jerusalem shall be owned by gentile nations ? Will Israel then give it up after a defeat in war ???

2 Thes 2:4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.

This is the spirit of antichrist refuting the deity of Jesus Christ. They seek to restore their blasphemous satanic council that was setup to condemn Jesus, and carry on their animal sacrifices. By doing this they fulfill prophecy, to welcome in their false messiah, their man of sin - The antichrist. Do not be deceived O elect of the LORD.

Jesus warned his followers that they would be delivered up to synagogues, sanhedrins, prisons.......etc.

I seriously doubt Christians will be delivered up to Jewish Sanhedrins........but, with God anything is possible

Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local Sanhedrins and be flogged in the synagogues.
Matthew 24:9
Then will they deliver you to tribulation, and shall be killing ye, and you will be hated by all the nations on account of My name.

But take ye heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to Sanhedrins and in synagogues shall ye be beaten; and before governors and kings shall ye stand for my sake, for a testimony unto them.

Now the Chief priests and all the Sanhedrin sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.

================================
"Sanhedrin" used only in 5 chapters in Acts outside the Gospels.

Acts 4:15
So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.
Acts 5:
21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.
When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles.
27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.
34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while.
41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.

Acts 6:
12 So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin.
15
All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

Acts 23:

1 Then Paul, looking earnestly at the Sanhedrin, said, “Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.”
6
But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the Sanhedrin, “Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee; concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
15
“Now you, therefore, together with the Sanhedrin, suggest to the commander that he be brought down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to make further inquiries concerning him; but we are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
20
And he said, “The Jews have agreed to ask that you bring Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomorrow, as though they were going to inquire more fully about him.
28
And when I wanted to know the reason they accused him, I brought him before their Sanhedrin.
20
“Or else let those who are here themselves say if they found any wrongdoing in me while I stood before the Sanhedrin

Revelation 2:9
9 “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are rich);
and I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
13 “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.

Revelation 3:9

“Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—
indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.

•The first quotes say the Romans “dug up the foundations” and had “overthrown foundations” of Antonia. •

From Wars of the Jews, by Josephus, Book 6, Chapter 2, Section 7

"7. In the mean time, the rest of the Roman army had, in seven days’ time, overthrown [some] foundations of the tower of Antonia, and had made a ready and broad way to the temple. Then did the legions come near the first court, (12) and began to raise their banks."

Based on everything Josephus wrote about Fort Antonia, the Romans took a week to break holes through the foundation of the fort, in order to gain access.

Based on what we know now about the size of the fort and the fact that the Romans later used the fort as a base to attack the temple, they did not destroy the entire foundation.
Some of the stones in the Western wall are 40 feet long.
Can you imagine attempting to break a hole through that type of stone wall?

Bob Cornuke's book "Temple" has created quite a stir among those who are advocating for a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem.
Some of them are Christians.

Cornuke's book reveals the true location of the ancient temple.

Tradition is a hard thing to overcome, especially for Orthodox Jews who have been visiting the "Temple Mount" for many years.

Those who produced the following series of videos attacking Bob Cornuke's book have claimed that Josephus said the Romans completely destroyed the fort by "the razing of the fort down to nothing".

This fabrication is found at time 29:00, and is repeated at time 33:00, "down to the ground".

They ignored what Josephus wrote below about the Romans using Fort Antonia as a base to attack the temple on the day the temple was set on fire.

(Wars of the Jews, Book 6, Chapter 4, Sections 4-5)

As the flames went upward, the Jews made a great clamor, such as so mighty an affliction required, and ran together to prevent it; and now they spared not their lives any longer, nor suffered any thing to restrain their force, since that holy house was perishing, for whose sake it was that they kept such a guard about it.

Does it really matter if the location of the ancient Jerusalem temple and the Antonia fort have not yet apparently been finally resolved? No Biblical doctrine relies on their exact relationship.

Its just fascinating that where the Temple mount is supposed to be today, could very well not be the correct place.

The truth always matters, especially when people are willing to die for a piece of ground.

Fort Antonia (Herod’s Praetorium, Acts 23:35) was built by Herod and given to the Romans. It was used to house the thousands of Roman soldiers needed to police the ancient city of Jerusalem.

In Acts 23:23 the Romans sent 470 soldiers to escort one man. Are we to believe all of the soldiers from the fort were sent with this one man?

During 73 AD the Jewish leader at Masada said the only thing left of Jerusalem was that which belonged to the Romans.

Mar 15:16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.

Act_23:35 he said, "I will hear you when your accusers also have come." And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's Praetorium.

Based on Acts 21:31-40, we know the Roman fort was above the temple because the soldiers had to go “down” to rescue Paul from the mob at the temple. Paul later spoke to the crowd below from the steps.

The Jewish historian Josephus said Fort Antonia was built upon a gigantic rock, on the highest hill, and had passages that went “down” to the temple. Josephus described it as a large structure, instead of what we find in Avi Yonah’s modern model of the fort. Josephus also said the fort blocked the view of the temple on the north side.

All of this provides tremendous evidence that the Dome of the Rock is the true location of Fort Antonia.

If at least part of Fort Antonia remained on the day the temple was destroyed, where is that part of Fort Antonia now?

Watch the YouTube video… The “Temple Mount” is Roman Fort Antonia, by Leeland Jones, to see the truth with your own eyes.

The facts are there. Why do the Jewish people think differently? Its plain to see where the Temple actually was. The existing 'Temple mount' is obviously the Fort!

Ironic that the wailing wall the Jews love to pray and place written prayers into its cracks was a place built by idol worshipers.

Christ said not one stone upon another would remain of the temple.
I dont think He spoke figuratively.

Mark 13:1-3 New King James Version (NKJV)
Jesus Predicts the Destruction of the Temple
13 Then as He went out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!”

2 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”

obviously the Jews did not believe Him then and still dont, since they say the wall of the temple is still standing firm.

Yes. Jesus confirmed that 70ad prophecy in 3 other places.

Amen I am saying to ye,
not no may be being left here stone upon stone, which not shall be being thrown-down<2647>.”

Mark 13:2
And Jesus answering said to him, “thou are beholding these, the great buildings.
Not no may be being left here stone upon stone which not no may be being thrown-down<2647>

Luke 21:6
These which ye are beholding.
Shall be coming days in which not shall be being left stone upon stone here which not shall be being thrown-down<2647>

Those verses are also mentioned in Luke 19 concerning the complete City
Luke 19:
41 And as He nears, beholding the City, and He laments on Her, 42 saying, "That if Thou knew and Thou, even indeed in this day, the toward peace of Thee, now yet it was hid from Thy eyes.
43 That shall be arriving days upon Thee, and Thy enemies shall be casting up a rampart/siege-work to Thee and shall be encompassing Thee, and pressing Thee from-every-side. 44 And shall be leveling Thee and Thy offspring in Thee,
and not shall be leaving stone upon stone in Thee, stead which not Thou knew the season of the visitation<1984> of Thee".

Was Matt 24:2, Mark 13:2, Luke 21:6 and Luke 19:44 fulfilled in 70ad?
