I'm having a lazy session here and just posting an item from our Archbishop Mark Coleridge regarding Jerusalem, which of course is no stranger to violence. I suspect the motivation for the production is the fact Israel is at war.

It will be a series, so I'll have to remember to keep posting as it "happens". It is a podcast with a transcript.

Stay tuned for next week (or month or whatever).

Episode 4 - the first three segments were about the history of Jerusalem as a place. Now the Archbishop has movied onto the more "spiritual" meaning of Jerusalem.

The sixth paragraph has the following words - "And there was a little saying, and I’m going to give it to you in Latin. It never hurts you to hear a little bit of Latin. Lettera gesta docet, quid credas allegoria, Moralia quid agas, quo tendas, anagogia. In other words, the literal sense of Scripture teaches you what happened, history. And that’s what we’ve been exploring so far. And that’s important. You can never say farewell to the facts of history."

The Latin phrase "Lettera gesta docet, quid credas allegoria, Moralia quid agas, quo tendas, anagogia" means, courtesy of Google Translate, "Letters teach us, what to believe in allegory, morals what to do, what to aim for, anagogy."

Episode 5 - This time the emphasis is on hope and a high vision. The archbishop makes the point that the post exile prophets were encouraging a people who had been through the Babylonian exile and returning to a city in ruins, yet they needed to keep their eyes on a vision of a new Jerusalem.

In the case of the vision of John in the Apocalypse, he was encouraging Christians who were being persecuted by the Roman Empire, but they also needed to keep their eyes on the heavenly Jerusalem. But this one doesn't have a temple.

The next podcast with transcript will be the last one.
