As covered in my first post a battle rifle is a rifle that fires a full size rifle round, is magazine fed and generally semi automatic (1 shot per trigger pull).
So you want a rifle that has a powerful cartridge, Carries at least 20 rounds, has a good pedigree (seen combat and is durable) and is not a fortune as a matter of fact you want it as cheap as possible. What to do when these are the things your looking for.
Well your list might include the M1A (M14), the FN FAL, and the FNH Scar 17 but they all range from 1200 to 2500 and you could drop 4000 on some of the high end M14s in DMR/Sniper guise. But then there's the PTR 91....an HK 91 by another name.
This is an interesting rifle, it's started life as the CETME which morphed into the HK 91 which is a fine weapon extremely fine but incredibly exspensive. Then a Company now in North Carolina got ahold of the tooling to make the HK 91 here in America and the PTR 91 was born.
PTR still uses many of the parts HK used but can make everything themselves if need be. The best part is the cost of the magazines which have been sold for as little as 1.50...yes a buck fifty but now hover around 3.00 bucks and up.
The PTR 91 is tough, using a delayed roller recoil system which is as tough as they come. The rifle can function while dirty and can take a beating and still be there for you in a fight. The rifle is not light but that's all part of its charm, the weight helps soak up the recoil and let's you know the rifle is built to last.
There are versions made right now that fire the Russian AK round the 7.62x39 but we are talking about a battle rifle and that is a middle weight round and as such we can't include it in this article. No we are talking the 7.62x51 or 308, both of which can be fired by the PTR 91.
There are multiple versions of the PTR 91 but they start at 790 dollars, not bad for a full size hard hitting rifle. The cost of the magazines is a huge attraction making the rifle even a better deal.
The PTR 91 is battle field accurate at 300 yards, it's tough, built to last, parts are cheap and it's comfortable for most people to shoot. The newest variants have a picatinny rail mounted on top making installation of a scope very easy.
For 800 bucks it's hard to find another battle rifle with the qualities that the PTR 91 has. I think it's impossible actually, there isn't another battle rifle in that price range. Close yes maybe but just not that low with the qualities this rifle has.
