Pey - the MOUTH/WORD (Jesus and the Hebrew Alphabet)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 17th letter of the Hebrew Alphabet is PEY or sp. PEH. The word "PEY" means "mouth, word, opening, or extremity. It is therefore, symbolic of THE Word and of REPENTANCE (done with the MOUTH). The number 17 seems to somehow contain the sum of all the symbolism of divine numbers. It is, after all, the day of the Resurrection of Christ. How fitting that the letter that symbolizes the WORD should be the 17th.
Studying this letter involved, by far, the most time of all the letters. There was so much, it was hard to know where to begin with putting it all in some kind of overall theme or order, but I finally felt TWO main themes came forth the strongest:
The first being that of the TWOFOLD effect of speech or words, including THE Word of God
And, second, the connection between REPENTANCE/SALVATION and the MOUTH(spoken words).
The POWER of the mouth(speech) is attested to often in scripture. God created the whole universe with the Power of WORDS……….and God SAID…..Words ALWAYS have an effect, either for good or bad. However there is another "twofold" effect of words. Words effect both the hearer AND the speaker. There are several verses that talk of the fact that we shall "eat of the fruit of our mouth".(Prov 12:14, 13:2, 18:20) This concept is not as strong in the Western or Greek mind as it is in the Hebrew. We do, however, have idioms like "he'll have to eat his words", but it is more in the thinking that we'll just have to take back what we've said and admit we're wrong. In the Hebrew thought, the consequences are much broader in scope, more like the reaping and sowing principle. Words are VERY POWERFUL:
Jam 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
Jam 3:6 And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
The sense is that a single word can have effects into the "farthest CORNERS" or "EXTREMITY", hence, the other meanings of "PEY" of an edge or extremity. In fact, the ROOT of the word PEY is PAAH, which means CORNER or EDGE or EXTREMITY.
Zec 10:3-4 …. for the LORD of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle.
Out of him came forth the corner,……..
That is none other than Christ, the chief cornerstone…..the one who encompasses ALL the WORD which will reach into the furthest corners of the earth:
Hab 2:14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
The point being, our words and God's Word WILL be FRUITFUL. They will either bear GOOD FRUIT or BAD FRUIT, but they WILL bear fruit.
Now, the other theme of the Pey….the MOUTH and REPENTANCE, is also about BEARING FRUIT. Scripture says we must bring forth "FRUIT worthy of our repentance". If our repentance is REAL it WILL bear GOOD FRUIT!
Scripture is also clear on the fact that belief must be SPOKEN with the MOUTH, as well as ascent in the head and heart:
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
The 17th time the word "mystery" is used in the NT(Itim 3:8-9), it speaks of not being "doubletongued"!
The Pey is the 3rd letter of the 3rd group of seven letters in the Hebrew alphabet. It therefore corresponds to the 3rd feast, FIRSTFRUITS. If you go to this sight,

you will see that the pey as written in the sacred script must be made up of a KAF(over layed with a resh), and a VAV so that the blank space in the center forms the letter BET. Bet is the letter that is symbolic of the SON or the promised seed……..in other words the PEY(the WORD) is filled with the BET(SON)! ALSO, the four letters making up the letter pey-bet, kaf, vav, and resh, together form only one possible word – bikur – which means FIRSTFRUITS!
