conspiracy theories that supposedly explain why everything is as it is
(for example Alex Jones, ranting that the Sandy Hook shooting never
happened, and was just a Deep State fake event).

It does not help that BOTH of the big political parties have refused to take
a first step to harden the "soft target" of our public schools, and continue
to resort to speeches about "hardening our schools", after about 2 decades
of expicilty DOING NOTHING to practically guard our school children.

Both political parties can go through the MEANINGLESS public "weeping" rhetoric
of "How could this happen", and "how could we stop this from ever happening
again?" Our lawmakers have known what they could do, and THEY HAVE DONE
NOTHING, for a couple of decades, while we have had dozens of school shootings.

I mainly agree but I think we have a culture of mental health that's just not working at all.

However, after the implementation of the welfare state black Americans went from having around a 25% single parent household to having an approximately 75% single parent rate and it's very likely similar statistics among white poor as well.

I would like to see a system for helping those in poverty that really encourages two parent homes instead of the way it's set up now which very much seems to discourage them.

We definitely need to reexamine skills trades for young men as well and make sure there's a place for them that's positive, even those who are poorer.

I think there's a lot we can consider in policy that could help.

I agree that there is a lot of pathological behavior in current American society.


But, why allow THIS specific pathological behavior of school shootings go
on, when the Israelis suggested, a couple decades ago, how to stop them?

Saying that there are increasing trends of mental illness in American society
(an argument that some people use), does not explain why specific causes
of mental illness (if this is the cause of school shootings) are not being
specifically addressed.

We do not allow drivers, who have "gone ballistic" in road rage, to continue
to drive -- we take away their license to drive, and then imprison them.
What we DO NOT DO, is simply engage in a weepy public rhetoric of
"How could this road rage happen? Look at the results of increasing trends
of mental illness in society...."

America should FIRST of all be concerned THAT school shootings continue to
happen, and FIRST be concerned with STOPPING THEM. If we can practically
stop the shootings, without engaging in a 2 century program of identifying a
15-dimensional mental illness model that explains school shootings, we ought
to simply stop the school shootings.

I would say that American members of Congress should take the same
practical approach to stopping abuses to our citizens, without getting
sidetracked into debating massively complex theories of mental illness,
and especially the ones being put forward by Alex Jones and Tucker Carlson.

I would say the same thing about the pathological effects of constant cell phone
use by young people, and cyber crime. And "demonstrations" that are used as a cover
for rioting and lynching.

Fix the problems.
Stop arguing about conspiracy theories that supposedly explain them.
And stop trying to argue that the Constitution allows these types of
pathological behaviors.

I get Harris' point that we should never normalize murder at school. But it is a fact of life and to try and score political points is nasty. Vance was just suggesting hardening schools to make it less likely. This is out of place too because schools are a state and local matter. So too bad they comment about emotional stuff and not about what they can do as VP or President. We know that it is basically nothing. They will have less impact than Taylor Swift.

Note that the Democratic vice presidential candidate, does not think
that these ongoing school shootings, should be seen as a "fact of life".

We COULD HAVE LEGISLATED that K12 schools should have metal detectors,
so that no firearms would be allowed in them. This was the Israelis' advice
to Americans, years ago.

There is no freedom in America, that guarantees that underage children
can carry firearms.

We should not have to rely on warnings from parents, that "I think my child
wants to shoot up their school". After all, parents who are responsible for
letting their underage kids have access to firearms, have ALREADY
shown that they are IRRESPONSIBLE PARENTS.

Why should Americans continue to mourn deaths and traumatic wounds in

I understand your anger over the issue and appreciate you not igniting the never ending gun ban argument, but allow me to add a different perspective to the thread of responses.

Perhaps some or even all schools need metal detectors, but I'd suggest that such determination is one for the local or state jurisdictions to decide, not the federal government's DOE or even the legislative Congress. It concerns me that people today so generally expect the federal government to address all problems within the nation. That is not what our Constitution or founding fathers intended, but disregard for this paramount premise has led to a behemoth government that's grossly overpowered, financed, and influential upon society.

May I remind people that this was supposed to be a nation of states with each having different values and laws representative of the people. Yes, Congress can and must legislate laws impacting national issues, but I think school safety, curriculums, and policies are best left to the local levels where such things reflect the wishes and priorities of their constituents.
