Several reasons, IMO:

1. They're brought up that way.
2. To keep their job.
3. Peer pressure, as you stated (I've seen this happen).
4. They invest a lot of their money in education that teaches it; and as the Bible says, Where your treasures are, there will your heart be also.
5. Satan influences it.
6. Other stuff.

You never heard that Adam was a creationist? The Kabbalah or oral tradition goes back to Moses. Some people say that the oral tradition goes all the way back to Adam.

I ask because even conservative Christians who are scientists date our universe by billions of years. Even the Discovery Institute.
