I thought about this after I saw the thread on Padre Pio. The similarities between St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina and St. John Maximovitch of Shanghai and San Francisco are very similar. I thought that it would be interesting to have a thread comparing the two.
Both of them spent many hours involved with spiritual work - St. Padre Pio spent over 19 hours a day saying Mass and hearing confessions. St. John Maximovitch served the 1 1/2 hour Divine Liturgy daily, een when he was sick. He barely slept, and when he did, he never slept in a bed.
Extraordinary phenomena have happened to and by both of them. Padre Pio supposedly knew your sins before you told him them in confession, and he would remind you if you had forgotten any. Healings are reported to have happened by him. St. John Maximovitch was endowed with the gift of clairvoyance. A woman wrote to him, asking him to help a widow with children. She received no reply. When St. John came to Hong Kong, where she lived, he saw her and said "You were the one who wrote the letter." Miraculous healings have also happened by St. John. A woman damaged in a horse race was healed by his prayers, and many miraculous healings have been attributed to his intercessions.
A book about Padre Pio was called Padre Pio: the Wonder Worker. In the Orthodox Church, St. John Maximovitch is called "St. John the Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Fransisco".
St. John died in 1966. St. Padre Pio died in 1968.
Many more similarities probably exist between the two, and if anyone would like to know more about St. John Maximovitch, then click here.
Let us all try to emulate both of these saintly men.
