Hi all,

I just had a question about speaking in tongues...I do speak in tongues quite often and I was wondering what you guys think happens when we do? I know that the Bible says that it brings edification to the one praying, but I was wondering if speaking in tongues can also be the Holy Spirit using us to intercede for others? For instance, when I speak in tongues, I often wonder if the Holy Spirit is using my mouth in order to accomplish something in someone else's life besides my own...like maybe I am actually praying for someone in Zimbabwe or somewhere else that I don't even know, but the Holy Spirit does and is using my prayer language to intercede on their behalf?

But, I'm wondering...is this scriptural? Or does praying in tongues only cause the Holy Spirit to intervene on OUR behalf and only brings edification to US?

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Pam

Thanks! Now here's another question...when we are praying in tongues and we are interceding for other people, do their names come up in our prayer language? I was wondering how this works...like what if I am actually interceding for someone named "Sam"--does his name get translated into a new word that I am speaking when I speak in tongues? Or does the Holy Spirit do it another way?

Deep question, I know!

I don't really have an answer, but don't you find that the Spirit brings someone to mind at times while praying in tongues and you intercede for them both in English and tongues?

Intercession is you praying for someone else in the anointing both in your known language and in unknown languages. This is a huge subject. There are people called as prayer warriors and that's how God uses them, some of them pray up to 8 hours a day. Others of us get used from time to time to pray for others.

Sometimes you will say the name of the person you are praying for in your own language while you are praying in the unknown language in the spirit. Other times you won't know who you are praying for, but you will know it's not for you but someone else. God does use us to pray for people on the other side of the world, and sometimes you will get the country and sometimes you won't.

Intercesory prayer is a broad ministry for God. He does lots and lots of things in this area with different people.

I love when the Holy Ghost comes on me to pray for others. It's a high like no other.

When you are speaking in Tongues it come from your spirit man, meaing you are giving a pure prayer coming from your spirit and not adding our own wants and needs. Sometimes our spirit will be praying for people we don't even know in other country:)

Over the years as I've prayed with people and taught them about prayer, I've noticed something. They are always wanting steps and formulas to help them pray more effectively.

As you probably know (if you know me at all), I don't teach prayer that way because I've learned that real prayer is a relationship - a back and forth interaction with God that is different every time. And often, steps and formulas inhibit that interaction more than they enhance it.

But as I was thinking about this subject, it dawned on me that there is one step in prayer that is always the same.

It doesn't matter whether you're praying a prayer of commitment or a prayer of intercession. It doesn't matter whether you're praying in tongues or in English. It doesn't matter whether you're praying for your family or for the president.

There is something you must do every single time you pray. And if you don't do it, your prayer will fall flat.

What is this first crucial step?

It is this: You must come to God.

The prayer that has power is the prayer that is offered unto God. And to truly pray unto God, we must first come to Him.
- Lynne Hammond

That may sound ridiculously simple, but it's amazing how many times we forget to do it! It's amazing how many times we plunge into loud machine-gun-like tongues, or fervent scripture confessions without first bowing our hearts and consciously coming before God.

As a result we pray with a great awareness of ourselves, of our need, of the subject we are praying about - but no real consciousness of the One we are supposed to be speaking to!

In Acts 12, we see the New Testament account of a prayer meeting that brought great results. The apostle Peter was in prison. Herod was planning to kill him just as he had killed James. But the Church said, "No! We refuse to lose another ministry gift! We refuse to lose Peter!"

So, verse five tells us, "prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him."

Prayer Unto God
Often, when we study this verse, we major on the phrase "without ceasing." But there is another phrase that is important there. It is the phrase "unto God."

The prayer that has power is the prayer that is offered unto God. And to truly pray unto God, we must first come to Him.

Actually, if you'll search the Bible on this subject, you'll find that from beginning to end there is always an order in the seeking of God. That order is to come...and to go. First you come to God, then He gives you directions and you go obey them.

Remember Elijah? God called him away to a riverbank. Elijah stayed before God on that riverbank for three years. Then the Lord said, "Go tell King Ahab it's going to rain" (1 Kings 17-18).

God called John the Baptist to come to Him out in the desert and he stayed there for a long time. Then one day the Lord said, "You go and tell the house of Israel to prepare the way of the Lord."

It's the same way in prayer. Romans 8:26 says we don't know what to pray as we ought so the Holy Spirit has to help us. So before we do anything else in prayer, we must make sure we've connected with Him.

How do we do that? We purposely, by faith, seek His guidance. We respond to His promptings with great reverence, understanding that He is not just some vague spiritual influence; He is the person and presence of God.

We purposely become aware of Him and say, "Holy Spirit, help us to pray now. We are depending on You and we are yielded to you. You are the Leader and we are following You."

He'll Draw You In Several Ways
Sometimes, He'll test you to see if you're serious. He'll let you sit quietly and wait on Him for a while. Or sometimes, He'll lead you to set aside your "prayer agenda" and worship Him for a while. The more you do that, the more familiar with Him you'll become and the easier it will be to hear His voice and sense His leadings.

Increase your reverence for the presence of God and the manifestation of His presence will increase. The more you seek Him, the more He will reveal Himself to you.

Remember that as you pray in the days to come, make sure that before you go out into various areas and types of prayer...you've come first unto God. Have times when you just minister to Him and love Him for who He is.

Come to God first and foremost. Then, when He says "Go!" you'll be ready.

This subject has always intrigued me because of an experience I had at the time I was brought to Christ. I was impartial to Christianity at the time, which is to say that I didn't dismiss it but neither was I committed to nor even interested in it. Then this patient came to my theatre and before I knew it, I was consumed with concern for him. I experienced (though not able to define it as such at the time) the presence of the Holy Spirit around him whilst he was being operated upon.

A couple of days later, I suddenly and inexplicably began to sob. This carried on from 6pm on the Friday till around 5pm on the Saturday. I had no idea what was going on but later recognised the call of God and gave my life to Jesus. About two weeks later I learned that this young man's life had been in the balance for all of that 23 hour period and the docs who were looking after him were puzzled as to how he had survived not one but FOUR episodes where he should most certianly have died.

Since then I have never doubted intercessory prayer though, come to think of it, I'm not quite sure that this isn't OFF TOPIC!

Sorry!

In Acts 1 it talks about how when the apostles received the holy spirit into manifestation (ex. speaking in tongues, some thought they were crazy, some knew that they were glorifying God, which meant some understood their languages. It is perfect prayer and intercession also. Romans 8 talks about this I think.

I have had many instances where God has called upon me for prayer and I did not know what or who I was praying for.

Once my friend and I were out of town - I was driving and she suddenly said - we need to pray in the Spirit right now - we prayed for awhile and had no idea what for - when she got home she found out her next door neighbor was in a car wreck and was at death's door. The wreck was at the very time we were praying. That was really neat.

I was out in the yard and felt the need to pray - did not know who or why - I just prayed - found out my son and his family was in a wreck - rolled their car 2-1/2 times - twins 2-1/2 years old hanging upside down in their car seats - no injuries - there was a miracle there - and also they found a quarter that was bent double from the wreck - my daughter-in-laws name is Erica - she was driving - on that quarter that was bent double - all you could see was the erica (being America and bent to just erica) - and In God We Trust -

I love it when God uses us in such a way.

I am in both Leadership but also on our Prayer team in out Catholic Charismatic Prayer Group. When we have someone come up for prayer and annointing, we usually do not know everything this person needs. We almost always spend some time praying in the Spirit.
There was one time when I was backing the team up in prayer as they prayed over one person. During that time, the Lord mentioned the name of another person who was present but standing across the room, quietly. I started praying in the Spirit for this person and was absolutely amazed to see the person slip to the floor, fully slain in the Spirit. No one had laid hands on them or anything. I was later told this person had received a physical healing at this time. God works the way God works.

HI SharonL
Thats great. I've had lots of experiences like that too.

One was the time the Lord woke me up about 1 AM and immediately I saw like in a vision, a car and it was hard to see like in a bizzard and really deep snow.I could see the headlights flash and then --nothing! I started praying in the my Spirit as soon as I saw it -I prayed in tongues for quite awhile then went back to sleep. I had no idea who i was praying for but that wasnt unusual that the Lord would have me intercede for someone I dont know. But later we got a call from a relative .They said they got caught in a blizzard and had a wreck so bad it should have killed them but they were going to be alright. I told them I think the Lord did that for them and told what happened to me even tho they dont believe in praying in the spirit. Sure enough it was at 1AM on the night I was praying. They believe it now ^_^
