Many modern ovens contain a feature that is called “Sabbath mode”. This allows the oven to be turned on before Shabbat and maintain temperature whether or not you open the door. The light is also turned off inside the oven so that even if you open it, it won’t come on. Food is put into the oven before Shabbat. It is fully cooked before Shabbat and then kept warn until desired.

When I pulled out my oven manual I was surprised to find that this feature was on my oven as well! Anyway I thought this was pretty cool how much Torah has actually infused our culture without us even knowing. Right under our pots and pans. I think I’ll try it out this Shabbat. For a complete listing of ovens with this feature clickhere. http://www.star-k.com/cons-appl.htm

Yep. It's easier to use a blech though.

how do you type out the pronunciation?

the 'ch' is like at the end of "Bach".

I know it is a funny word. It sounds like what you might say when trying a food that you don't like, "blech!"

Maybe someone else can type out the proper phonetic symbols for you.

Yeah, it has a really funny sounding name. Works great though! We picked up an electric one from happyhomepage for $65.

Okay, so I will try to explain it's pronunciation for everyone out there.

b - l - e - ch

The 'ch' in blech is pronounced like the words 'ch'allah or 'ch'ai.

I did finally buy me a digital camera. We have a oven in here(building) that thinks its a freezer. We don't manufacture them or sell them anymore, but it was an interesting appliance.

You could take out some frozen meat or whatever, turn the freezer on in the oven and it will keep the entree frozen. You set a timer to turn the freezer off at a time that will have the entree prepared for you by the time you get home. If for some reason you don't make it home in time, or something comes up, the oven will shut off the heat and gradually begin to refrigerate.

I'll go take a picture of it, just not sure if i have the camera software here to load on this pc.

We have smart appliances now too. These are internet interface equipped. It will even give you a call if you leave your refrigerator door open, because the drop in temperature will set off an alarm. Neat stuff!

Well, they aren't so much skilled shaped as they are just
a flat piece of sheet metal. I made mine by buying a
piece of sheet metal at Home Depot, cutting it to cover
the entire cooktop, and leaving it long enough so I could
bend the front of it to cover the stove knobs. To keep
food warm, you have to have it on a "covered fire" and
the blech serves as that cover. Also, there are steps
you must follow if you take the pot off the stove and
then want to return it....having the fire covered is one
of those steps....
The "e" in blech is pronounced "eh", like they say in
Canada

I did not know that my oven was self cleaning. :o
I have lived here for 4 years.
I cleaned it the other day and my neighbor came by and saw my big note to self to clean oven and she told me that my oven is the same as hers and it is self cleaning.
There is a button on it that says "self clean".
I feel dumb.

Tired of cleaning the stove top pieces, can't seem to get the gunk off. Try putting them in the self cleaning oven the next time you clean it, and they will come clean too without the work.

Thank you for telling me that - I would never have thought of it. My electric stove burner pans are icky looking even though I use the foil liners. I will try to remember to put them into the oven when I decide it is dirty enough to try the self-clean function.

Torah - a big thank you for your alert. I went to my Appliance Manual notebook (I'm at least that organized) and pulled out my GE oven manual and lo and behold - I've got the Sabbath Mode. I never even knew - I mean, who reads the manual unless you can't figure out how to work something - right?
