What is your explanation of the Bible stories of how the Sherpherds having to break the legs of sheep that stray.

I have a little story and will tell it after I hear a few of yours.

Remember a thread like this when I first joined and Although I cannot remember the link now, It stated that to break a sheep's leg was to put a weight on it so the sheep could not run, so more to brake the sheep's leg rather than to break the sheep's leg.

I don't recall the Bible verses that say that - can you share them please?

I don’t know. I have heard it said but it sounds a bit contrived to me.

Still, I would like to brake (if not break) the direction some of God’s sheep are headed.

That is what I have read - if the sheep keep straying - they tie a heavy weight on the leg making it a "brake" to slow it down from running away - they didn't actually break the leg - although that is how some have taken it to mean.

I remember that thread too. I'm looking for it now.

I was raised on the farm and we had 70 head of sheep. It would only take one bad sheep to cause all the others to stray.
There would be one sheep that would jump the fence and then all 70 would jump the fence one we acknowledged which sheep was the cause we would tie a drag around its neck so it could not jump the fence and the straying would be stoped.
This is the same trap many people fall into as deciples of Christ, they follow one person instead of following Christ and that one person can and will lead them astray. The Bible warns us of these people it calls them false prophets and false teachers. And we stop them in the same method as you do the sheep. We tie a drag of TRUTH around their necks and prevent them from leading others astray.

I was the one who posted about this issue. I had heard about this practice so I attempted to find some reliable source and could not find it online. I did find it referenced in a lot of Christian writing. I could not however find anyone who actually knew about sheep who could validate that this practice has ever taken place.

In a final attempt to get some sort of authoritative answer to this question I send an e-mail off to the editor of “Sheep” magazine.

I published his answer in this forum but I can not find it now.

As I recall, he said there is no such practice to purposely “break” a sheep’s leg. There is however a practice to “brake” a sheep’s leg. The sheep’s leg is not broken, it is splinted to hobble the sheep in order to keep it close to the shepherd until it learns not to wander away.

It is understandable how one hearing “break” instead of “brake” could misunderstand what is taking place.
