I hadn't heard of this before today, but people use Ruth 1:16-17 for their marriage vows..

Ruth 1:16-17
16 But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me."

Ever heard of that? Thoughts?

She's saying it to her mother in law not her spouse. But it's still some very nice verses indicating choosing loyalty/faithfulness to someone. I can see why it would be used for marriage vows; but it wasn't said originally as a romantic or marriage vow.

"Fried Green Tomatoes" rocks! I need to get it on DVD.

I've also heard the verse "the Lord watch between me and you while we are apart" (Genesis 31:49) used in a romantic way, even though that isn't the Biblical context of it.

I'm not sure what I think of it. Is it sweet and creative, or is it cheesy and cheap? I don't know.

I couldn't decide at first either..

But I think the idea is growing on me..maybe mostly because I think the traditional vows are just ....people say them like they would say the pledge of allegiance or something. They don't think about what they are saying. Saying something not so used would force you to reflect on it more...imo...

Yeah...
It was part of the vows at my second wedding. Her mother thought it to be funny. (she never heard scripture before)
We shortened and modernized it though when we later were laughing about her gaff..."Your peeps are going to be my peeps"

It didn't save the marriage...but then again that wife never knew how to be married to begin with.

That reminds me of the movie "fried green tomatoes". Ruth tore that page from her Bible and mailed it to Izzy. :)

LOL

...well...back to the OP.....mm..

Ruth is awesome. I think it parallels with our obedience or rather our willingness to give up everything to follow God.

I've never heard of it as wedding vows, but I do like it though...absolutely devoted. :)

It's definately better than:

YOU
ME
Like DIS (fingers crossed)

(but hey...you know what? If it's said sincerely, it's a go. ;)
