I don't know what Elton John is talking about, but it does seem like a lot of older rockers are getting sober, which makes sense. I'm happy for them. That's a good thing. But (Bill Hicks), would we have all that great music if they hadn't been really high?

Rule #1: Don't drink so much that you need to give it up. Too much of anything is a bad thing (said Bradskii whilst literally sucking on a cold beer).

Yeah, moderation is key.
Old AA joke: two AAers are talking and one said, “You know if I could drink like a normal person…I’d drink all of the time!”

These are some of the smart ones the others are either dead or in jail.
It's always those who overinduldged who then turn around and call for people to not induldge at all, as if that somehow makes up for what they did.
Are they telling you the truth or virtue signaling? Nothing can make up for the destruction that happens when addicted to drugs and alcohol and these guys giving you their story just like I give my kids my story or anyone else when the conversation of drugs comes up.

Old AA joke: two AAers are talking and one said, “You know if I could drink like a normal person…I’d drink all of the time!”
There is some truth to the joke. Since when I drink I drink till I drop and I've thought of your joke on many occasions while watching friends and kids drink. I always wished that I could have a couple of beers like the normal drinkers but... now I limit myself to once or twice a year while deluding myself to think each time I'm going to have a couple.

I have to imagine that part of this is the changing economics of the industry. Sure, these guys are too old to party like that anymore, but the scene is different among the younger bands, too (though perhaps not to the point of teetotaling). The money has shifted from going to the bands' lifestyles to going to the business and production. Pulling off an arena or stadium show needs hundreds of people working together in a highly choreographed manner, which you can't do if you're strung out. It's not guys piling speakers on a bunch of scaffolding and hanging par cans from the roof anymore - the engineering alone in these shows is significant and if you're not on top of what you're doing, you'll kill people and lose a lot of money.

Bands, for their part, are getting less revenue from record sales, and even less from touring these days, and having to be more entrepreneurial in the process. It strikes me that that mindset leads one to probably live a less reckless lifestyle.

Also, there are no young rock stars. Only old ones, who lived (or didnt) through those eras of excess. If youre young and huge its in pop or hip hop.

I don't know if y'all know this but stats for substance use amongst kids has been dropping for a while; "problem substance use" even more so.

It's interesting. There is a very common belief that substance addition is tied to a lack of a sense of belonging in conjunction with trauma. I know that connection is a "big deal" in modern parenting ("in my day" kids and parents didn't really play or do all THAT much together), and I wonder if that connection is leading to a lowering in the frequency of substance use....

Fathers in the US today spend more time with their kids than mothers did in the 50's and 60's.

I don't really get it. I like my kid. I like hanging out with her. My only guess as to what's changed is that the nature of work has gotten more engaging and fulfilling and people aren't looking for an escape as much from home.

Or maybe we're all more woke.

MY experience was atypical because my mom was in a clinically significant depression after her dad died for quite a long time (my only real memories coming home from school was of mom lying in bed) and my dad was a workoholic.

BUT my good friends didn't have parents with those things going on and they just went about and did their own thing leaving my friends mostly alone too. It seemed parents spent more time involved in their own things.

It may be the BEST gift this generation of parents can give their kids is time and connection.

It's interesting, my kids have both expressively and repeated said they would never ever ever do drugs. Just not interested.

But I remember even in junior high thinking "I'd try that" (to be honest though: I haven't actually tried that many drugs....and only natural source ones). Looking back, I wouldn't be at all surprised if my lack of connection at that time made those kinda things look more appealing.
