For in Eastern Christianity a symbol is not a stand-in for what is absent, but the physical manifestation and evidence of its presence. The human face, for example, is the symbol, in this sense, of this or that particular human person; it is the outward image manifesting the inward reality, yet cannot be separated from it. In the same way, the sacraments are symbols of the grace they convey and in being consecrated from the very stuff of matter in this world, the sacramental elements, as symbols, manifest the truth about those elements, be they water and oil in Baptism; bread and wine in Communion; the crowns at marriage; whatever they be, once consecrated they not only bear a sacred power as means of grace, but moreover, point to the sacred nature of all matter, that once redeemed from the fall of creation by the action of the Holy Spirit and of Christ through his Church, begin to manifest the nature they had in the beginning and are to manifest as the future things.
The Orthodox Church abounds with the use of symbols. These symbols are those realities which have the power and competence of manifesting God to men, signs which carry us beyond ourselves and themselves into the genuine union and knowledge of things eternal and divine.
45Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46He told them, This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV) Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen
Of course we know about anointing with oil. It just doesnt hold the same fascination to us as it does to you. I have often wondered what our heavenly Father thinks when he sees his childish kids going around putting spots of oil on mirrors, doorposts, cars, the bosses desk (Im not kidding), wallets, letters, lawnmowers, chairs, tables, pets, etc.Zayit said:I am shocked that no one but you wants to answer this post. I thought that Charasmatic churches did this? I must be wrong.
There is a thread here that people sign up to that claim they are Spirit Filled but none know about this?

Then who is using all those annointing oils I see out there for sale?![]()
I dont know. I am not necessarily a fan of Wigglesworth.StevenL said:Did you know that Smith Wigglesworth had a side business....selling Anointing Oil Bottles? He had his own brand, apparently. So it can't be all bad, huh?
May I ask you Jim, what "facination" you assume I have? Someone asked me about this and I though that this was the place to come for help, I was obviously wrong. Yes, I can see the L-RD shaking his head, love one another............Jim M said:Of course we know about anointing with oil. It just doesnt hold the same fascination to us as it does to you. The Bible does NOT authorizes any such actions and, while it does have the appearance of being biblical (after all you can see them anointing with oil in the Bible, although it meant pouring a container of oil, not dabbing with oil), it is just an act (sometimes I think an act of desperation) to see spiritual movement.
I wonder, does God sometimes shake His head and roll His eyes at our antics.
And yes, the ritual has created a nice little cottage industry.

Your discription of what oil represents certainly follows how I have come to understand it.
Yes, I use oil all the time, mostly on people. But once my husband and I were broke down in the middle of eastern Washington, if you have ever been there, there isn't anything for miles and miles, but waving wheat fields. I happen to have my oil with me, and after sitting there for at least two hours, and no one coming by, I got the oil out and layed hands on the hood of the car, and prayed. and guess what it started right up..and nothing else ever happened to the car after that. I don't know if the oil meant something, I just know that scriptures at least support the use of it. But at the time I wasn't sure about using it on a car.
. . . putting spots of oil on mirrors, doorposts, cars, the bosses desk (Im not kidding), wallets, letters, lawnmowers, chairs, tables, pets, etc. . . .
