Matt Talbot can be considered the patron of men and women struggling with alcoholism and with other addictions .

Born in Dublin, in 1856, his father worked on the docks and had a difficult time supporting his family. After a few years of schooling, Matt obtained work as a messenger for some liquor merchants; there he began to drink excessively and soon became an alcoholic. For 15 years, until he was 30, he drank heavily.

But one day he decided to take 'the pledge' for three months, make a general confession and begin to attend daily Mass. There is evidence that Matt's first seven years after taking the pledge were especially difficult. Avoiding his former drinking places was hard. He began to pray as intensely as he used to drink. He also tried to pay back people from whom he had borrowed or stolen money while he was drinking.

Most of his life Matt worked as a builder's labourer. He joined the Secular Franciscan Order and from then on began a life of strict penance. He abstained from meat nine months a year and spent hours every night reading the Bible and the lives of the saints. He also prayed the rosary regularly. Though his job did not make him rich, Matt contributed generously to the missions.

After 1923 his health failed and Matt had to quit his job. He died two years later on his way to church on Trinity Sunday. In 1973 Pope Paul VI gave him the title Venerable.

Official Prayer for the Canonization of Matt Talbot

Lord, in your servant, Matt Talbot you have given us a wonderful example of triumph over addiction, of devotion to duty, and of lifelong reverence of the Holy Sacrament. May his life of prayer and penance give us courage to take up our crosses and follow in the footsteps of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Father, if it be your will that your beloved servant should be glorified by your Church, make known by your heavenly favours the power he enjoys in your sight. We ask this through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Matt Talbot

Part 1 of movie about the life of Matt Talbot featuring Seamus Ford. One of 12 children, Matt was reared in absolute poverty in north central Dublin at a time when there were no social services, and even water was fetched from public horse troughs. Semi-educated by the Christian Brothers who put him in a class for poor boys not likely to attend school for long, they were right, for his schooling ended as soon as he found a job. A 12-year-old illiterate is lucky to find work at all, but young Matt took a job as a messenger for a wine and beer bottling company. He soon learned it was easy to help himself to a drink whenever he wanted, and by age 13, Matthew Talbot was a confirmed alcoholic.

He earned a reputation as a hard worker, and for the next 15 years went from dock worker to brick layer and through it all he never stopped drinking. Alcohol claimed most of his wages, and he resorted to stealing and pawning to support his addiction. Then in 1884, Matt stayed away from work for an entire week, drinking heavily. Penniless and in debt to the local pubs, he waited for his friends after work; surely they would buy him a drink as he had bought them many times before. But they didn't want to know him. He found himself physically, mentally, and spiritually bankrupt. He went home sober for the first time in years. He reflected on his life and concluded that it was out of control because of drink. He remembered his early religious teaching and a Pledge of Sobriety offered by the Temperance preacher, Father Theobold Matthew, some years before; he decided to attempt it for three months to regain control of his life. It was battle he was not ready for. The terrifying withdrawal symptoms of Alcoholism were not understood in those days, and Matt battled nausea, hallucination, and depression. Lost for a place to spend his non-working hours, he turned to the Church. It was the beginning of an intimacy that would last his entire life. He attended daily Mass and communion before work. When his parish changed its first Mass from 5:00A.M. to 6:30A.M., he quit his job and got a new one so that he could still start his day with a Mass. With great effort, he completed three months of sobriety. He immediately renewed the pledge for six more months, and then renewed it for life.

His willingness to work hard, assured him of work when there wasn't much around. His spare time was spent in church or religious reading. The heavy drinking of his father and brothers showed him side of drink he had never seen, and he left home to live alone in a one-room flat. When work and church were done for the day, Matt would retire to his room to read and pray. His sister Susan recalled that in his free time he was never off his knees. Though privately he was a very serious and penitent person, at work he was pleasant and outgoing. Co-workers remember him as a conscientious, strong, yet gentle man who smiled at everything except a dirty joke.

Asking Matt's Help in the Presence of the Lord

Gentle Matt, I turn to you in my present needs and ask for the help of your prayers.
Trusting in you, I am confident your charitable and understanding heart will make my petitions your own.
I believe that you are truly powerful in the presence of Divine Mercy. If it be for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
the honour of Mary, our Mother and Queen and the deepening of my relationship with them, show that your goodness towards me, in my daily struggles, equals your influence with the Holy Spirit, who is hidden and at home in my heart.
Friend of pity, friend of power, hear, oh hear me in this hour, gentle Matt, please pray for me.

Matt Talbot - Urban ascetic

Matt Talbot - Urban ascetic | The Irish Catholic

( From the above article )

So, where is Matt’s cause at now? Fr Brain Lawless, Vice Postulator for the Cause of Canonisation of Matt Talbot provided The Irish Catholic with an update.

Speaking to this newspaper, Fr Lawless made it clear that the hierarchy “should be pushing for Matt Talbot to be canonised”.

“Matt was a poor working man from Dublin. He wasn’t a member of a religious order and he doesn’t have the big machinery behind him that the Franciscans or the Jesuits have to get their saints through. That’s why he cause is so important and needs support,” he pleaded.

“Part of his charm and endearment is that Matt is just like one of us. But that also goes against him to a certain extent. That’s why I’m batting for Matt. He’s one of the little guys,” he said.

Fr Lawless, a Dublin native who is responsible for eliciting a miracle that could lead to the beatification and eventual canonisation of Matt Talbot, claims a “physical miracle” is needed now for his cause to progress to the next stage.

“We need a miracle now that is not explainable by science, which is more or less instantaneous, and one that would verify that Matt enjoys the same devotion and regard in Heaven as he does here on earth.”

Fr Lawless is adamant, however, that if the process was based on moral miracles alone, Talbot “would been made a saint years ago”.

“There is still every chance that Matt Talbot could be made a saint in our life time. It’s just a matter of building up interest and momentum.

“At this time, when so many of our communities are affected by the scourge of alcohol and substance misuse, God has chosen Matt as a model of temperance and a source of strength and support to all who suffer from addiction or additive behaviours.”

Fr Lawless considers Matt “the ultimate lay man”. “He was very much part of this world. He got up early for mass, he did his days’ work and spent a lot of his time in prayer. He was able to live his day to day life and develop his spiritual life and faith in an urban setting.

“Matt has had a profound effect on the many people whose lives he has touched, particularly those who suffer from addiction. He truly lived the Christian virtues to a heroic extent, and that’s why he should be made a saint,” he said.

In turn, Fr Lawless openly admits Talbot has had “a deep and profound effect” on his own life as well.

“To see how an ordinary person can do extraordinary things and how the grace of God can work in a person’s life to raise them above the ordinary and bring them to great heights is a great example for all of us.

“It would mean a lot to me and to the ordinary people of Dublin if Matt were to be made a saint. It would be recognition of Matt’s generation and of their faith.

“It would also be a reminder to us that as we live in a more affluent and sophisticated society that, like Matt, we too can also develop our spiritual lives through prayer despite our busy and hectic schedules.”

“Surely, if faith is important to us, we, like matt, can make some time during the day for the lord,” Fr Lawless said.
