Put some tape over my mouth! Someone informed that I shouldn't ever use the word "jipped." I'm rather old and didn't even know that is an incorrect spelling. It should be gypped.

pejorative language - Is "jipped" a politically incorrect word ...

Feb 7, 2014 - … get jipped by some guy … A different user construed this as "casual racism", even though the whole conversation was completely unconnected to racial issues. It seems that the problem is the word "jipped" which Wiktionary says is. Probably from the term gypsy (“Roma”), due to a stereotype of the Roma as swindlers.

I didn't choose to grow up learning bad words. I didn't even know that was an unacceptable word.

The Romani, also known as the Roma, were originally dubbed "gypsies" in the 16th century, because this widely dispersed group of people were first thought to have come from Egypt. ... Linguistic history as well as a few limited genetic studies had already suggested the Romani originally hailed from India.

The g-word is offensive to gypsies; the n-word is offensive to blacks; the c-word is offensive to women... What we each need is a universal translator (ala Star Trek) programmed to keep up with the ever changing social mores. Then we never have to worry about getting fired for saying a politically incorrect word.

Seriously, I think everyone is way too sensitive and wants to be a victim of some sort.

Neither did I grow up with the Internet learning what the worldwide public consensus was for what is right and what is wrong, what is polite and what is not. (A standard that doesn't actually exist.)
I think our society if filled with too many adults who want their childish sensibilities catered to. Grow up people and take a chill pill!
You bet, but for the most part there is no way for them to change without Jesus' standard unless social pressure pushes them that way.

It's interesting to know how words we use came into being and how their use and implications have changed or softened over time.

To "jew down" and "be gyped" are derogatory terms. I guess I'm older and still remember how they were used to separate and cause prejudice.

By the way, the Roma are not immune to separating themselves into social classes by way of education or country and using this type of language themselves. It's like when whites call other whites "white trash" or when blacks call other blacks "n---ger"

Media is controlled by Communists. But I also read that Megyn was somewhat egotistical. May she rest in peace.
Being egotistical is not illegal. And in the good old days, neither was speaking freely. Nowadays it's obviously quite different. Speaking freely can easily cost you your livelihood.

Yeah, I do agree. But the more we let it happen, the worse it will become.

I'm not saying that doctors or nurses should actively speak out against vaccines, for example. But they could say "I'm not at liberty to comment on the safety of this medicine". Kind of gives the same message, and lets everyone know who's lurking behind the stage curtain.

There you are being sexist.
No, it would only be sexist if he prohibited women from being repairmen. Even the word 'woman' has the word 'man' in it, you know? Unless you spell it 'womyn'? o_O

Maybe then you should continue to use jipped and explain to any critics that no, you deliberately do not use gipped (the way my spell check renders it) or gypped for the reason that the latter has racial/ethnic associations yada yada yada. ;)

Unfortunately, for the average person there is no way to anticipate what the PC way of rendering anything is.

Womyn
is a redoing of the word woman. It's not woperson.

The chairman gave way to chairperson, but it's now just chair, a sexless term.

But actresses are now supposed to be called actors--the same as we always called men.

And firemen are now fire fighters--a description of what they do.

Well, I may be older than you, but oddly my mother never said a bad word about African Americans. OTOH, she made it clear that she didn't like rednecks. A redneck is a southern hick; there are northern hicks --- how are they better? We talked about getting gypped, but I didn't know that it had anything to do with gypsies. I thought it was spelled with a "J." My mother looked down on farmers. Her ancestors were farmers. My mother liked to move from state to state every year. I would call her a gypsy unaware that that could be taken as an insult.

 I don't know what we're allowed to say.

I say mailperson, because mine is a woman. My mother always said Spanish people instead of Puerto Rican, Cuban or Mexican. If we come back in fifty years, will we understand English? I don't even know the meaning of nm and some other acronyms.
