OK so I JUST moved to the area, and I'm trying to find a church. Where I lived before, I went to a Baptist church, but now that I'm here I want to try out some different churches. Can anyone tell me what makes a church Pentecostal? Anyone know how their beliefs compare to Baptists? Thanks for the info, and sorry for such general questions. :)

All churches within each of these general catagories are different.
My understanding is this:
Most baptist churches do not believe in the pentacostal type baptism with the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, the gifts of the Spirit, or the 5 fold minisitry.
Most baptist hold to the security of the believer, while most pentacostal churches (especially holiness) do not.

There are different degrees.
I hold the teaching in this way:
I believe once you are saved, normal "everyday" sins of the flesh do not cause you to lose your salvation. Only a "sin unto death" will cause you to be lost.
Some take this further and say that once you are saved there is no sin or act that you can commit that will cause you to be lost.
The other extreme are those who say that all it takes is one sin to damn the soul. An even further extreme says that "twice lost always lost". IOWs if you are saved and then commit a sin, then you are lost, cannot even repent of that sin, and are lost forever.

Many Pentacostals find themselves somewhere toward the one sin damns the soul end of the spectrum. But they know better in their heart but they just cannot escape the logic.

Ok didaskalos,

Can I ask this, you seem to have a good understanding of doctrine?
What would/could be the character type of a person who had committed a “sin unto death” ?

I’m serious about these questions I’m not trying to “spar” with you.

I’m interested in what you think.

Example:
If a person had committed a “sin unto death” would the Lord still work on them?

Would they want to have a relationship with Jesus or would they just not be interested in Jesus ?

Could a person be lost at the same time they are trying to repent ?

Would the Lord have someone pray for this type person ?

Thanks,

I have answers for these questions, I just do not want to hijack this thread with the topic.
Perhaps another thread.

There are different types of Baptists...which were you? (or are)....primitive? southern? independent? I spent over 40 years in the southern baptist church.

Most Baptists believe once saved always saved....that you can repeat a sinner's prayer and ask Jesus into your heart...and you now have fire insurance and nothing, absolutely nothing can keep you out of heaven. I now believe there's a bit more to it than that...repeating a prayer doesn't necessarily mean you truly believe what you say and embrace it in your heart.

Most will never refer to the gifts of the Holy Spirit as referred to by Paul in 1 Cor. 12-14....tongues, prophecy, discerning of spirits, interpretation, faith, miracles, healing, words of knowledge, words of wisdom...did I leave any out?

Baptism of the Holy Spirit? They would say you were baptized in the name of the Holy Spirit when you were water baptized.....Do you know what baptism of the Holy Spirit is? If you will read the beginning of Acts....you will see where the disciples were 'filled' with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues....(Jesus told them to tarry in Jeruselem where they would be baptized in the Holy Spirit....this was AFTER Jesus had breathed on them and they had received the Holy Spirit)......

Baptists like to say that was only for then...not now....Billy Graham says he can find not one verse to say the gifts of the Holy Spirit aren't for today.....In fact, in the good reverand's book The Holy Spirit.....he says that a church that doesn't allow tongues is doing the church a disservice and apparantly going against the teachings of the Apostle Paul.....I'd place a pretty hefty bet that a lot of Southern Baptist preachers would clinch their cheeks on that one! Every now and then, I'll peek in on the Baptist forum and if I see someone saying tongues is of the devil, I'll quietly drop that little bomb .....for most baptists...it's almost God the father, Jesus the Son, the Holy Spirit and Billy Graham...that is said very tongue in cheek with no disrespect....He is very respected amongst the baptists...as he should be..what a man of God!

I left the baptist church after God filled me with the spirit...baptized me with His power and I started seeing healings, hearing prophecy etc.....we are now in a vineyard church........we get a meaty, very scriptural sermon, but the Holy Spirit is allowed to move. Bless you!

I was an SBC member too until, at the age of eighteen, I was abducted into a black van and driven around with a gag on my mouth and blindfolded... I was taken into a building where others laid hands on me and I ended up speaking in tongues...

I AM ONLY KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went on my own will. And was filled with the Holy Spirit. Like a cup filled with water and kept on being filled until the water runs over the top.

Anyway, many charismatic churches started, more or less, this way. I can be considered a "Bapti-costal", really.

But many others who have had such experiences import the fuller aspect of the Presence of Christ by the Holy Spirit into their church. There are charismatic Anglican, charismatic Episcopalian, charismatic Baptist, charismatic Methodist, etc.

The doctrine varies really because of the aspect of different backgrounds that people come from.

Hey I was moving, sorry I didnt' respond to this quicker! Well honestly Id on't know what type of Baptist I was..the church didnt' ahve southern or independant in the name. It was just a great church that I raelly loved. I'm not sure I believe in once saved alwasy saved..but I don't believe one sin damns the soul, either. I'm not really sure..I'm a brand new Christian and went with the Baptist church because the people there were so nice and supportive, and it seemed the preacher was speaking right to me, his sermons were so on the mark.

I think that Bapo's (do you call them that in the US?) are cool... the biggest area of difference is the work of the Holy Spirit and Election vs. Freewill.

I do have concerns about the Baptist's interpreting election as God choosing who is going to be saved, I believe scripture is clear that God does not want anyone to go to hell. If you believe God has predetermined that certain people will go to hell, your view is warped (trying to put God into human understanding always fails). He has all knowledge which includes all knowledge of things that do not eventually happen.

He has knowledge of a reality in which x person is saved and x person is not...infact He is so far out He understands everything that did happen and everything that didn't happen but could and everything that didnt happen and couldnt possibly happen... God knows the effects of every minute decision, if we get a hair cut He knows what effect that will have on the rest of creation for eternity (spooky)!

If we believe too strongly in 'election' as being God choosing us exclusively it is not a good thing.

We need to turn our brains off sometimes and say I don't need to understand You God, I will just trust You!

The Holy Spirit is a case where Bapo's should turn off their brains and just seek God, if it happens awesome, if no, that is cool too! Why try understand God it is impossible. No need to speak in tongues, just let the H.S do His work in your life.

Peace.

* The content of this post does not represent the views of any church or infact me, cause I am human and will probably eventually have a better understanding of the subject or at least a better way to say what I said in the above post.*

Peace

PS: Bapo's are awesome! (just incase you thought I didin't like them, just mentioning 2 small differences that we have)

Pentecostalism really transends all denominational boundaries. There is not one single Christian Denomination that does not have someone who believes in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the continuance of the gifts of the Holy Spirit as practiced in the time of the apostles. I would find it difficult to attend a church that didn't openly teach the Pentecostal experience though. I am sure that it is the will of God for some people to be in un-Pentecostal Churches who are Pentecostal simply for the sake of unity.
