Is there a patron saint for those suffering from/having suffered from pleurisy? For those who don't know, pleurisy is when you have the pleural lining of your lungs inflamed. It creates a sharp, stabbing pain whenever you breathe.

I developed pleurisy most likely from a viral infection a couple years ago. While mine was caught and treated early, it can develop into a serious condition and can kill you. I still have no idea where I caught this from. It wasn't until long after I had healed from it that I realized how very serious this condition is, especially if you have fluid developing in the pleural cavity and it needs to be drained via thoracentesis.

Not one family member believed me at the time that there was anything wrong with me and I was just "faking" the pain. Seriously, I hope I never catch this nasty inflammatory infection(?) again.

Which makes me wonder again, is there a patron saint of those who have suffered/are suffering from pleurisy, or lung infections in general?

Yes. Bernadine of Siena and St. Therese. Also, I will add St. Raphael the Archangel, who's name means "God heals".

Prayers for you! God be with you!

I'm wondering if saints that suffered from TB would qualify?

As far as pleurisy...I don't recall reading about any who suffered from it.

I checked to see whether one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers (one of my favorite devotions in the Church: see link here for info: Saints.SQPN.com » Blog Archive » Fourteen Holy Helpers ) deals with infection or lung ailments but I'm not seeing any. I think the closest would be Saint Pantaleon, who was traditionally invoked by those suffering from TB or cancer.

Saint Teresa of Liseaux is apparently the patron saint of lung ailments. There is also another saint-named St. John Francis Regis-who died from pleurisy and pnuemonia. Also, Blessed Vicenta Chavez Orozco was hospitalized with pleurisy and it was there in that hospital that she discovered her vocation to care for the sick and the poor.

Is this contagious?

I do not believe that pleurisy is contagious, at least I was told at the time that mine was not. There are a multitude of different ways one can get pleurisy. If one gets a chest injury, it's probable that one could develop pleurisy. Or it could develop from another infection. Or they could be viral in nature (I was told this is how I received mine).
