Anyone here organic gardening?

My mom does because she is on a well and whatever she puts in the ground gets into her water.

There was an article in Organic Gardening about genetically engineered corn that was created to make its own insecticide. Monarch butterflies need corn pollen for part of their lifecycle and when they eat this corn they die.

So if you organic garden why? And if you organic garden or not do you buy organic food and/or products from the stores?

I do organic gardening for several reasons.

One because it *is* important not to put toxins and junk on our *food*, and no matter how well you wash the skin, you can't take poisons out of the inside of the food that have been sucked up by the roots all year long!

I also think it's important not to poison the soil as part of being good stewards of the earth.

I buy organic food as much as I am able, and will *only* grow organic, non-genetically modified, non-hybrid seeds and will not put anything but natural compost and water on the soil.

How is organic gardening any different than your regular guy doing his backyard garden with a little Miracle Grow. Most people dont have access to pesticides and herbicides that industry does anyways. Really isnt much difference. Anything that claims organic on it still uses chemicals, just less, or slightly different ones considering possibly more environmentally friendly.

I do try to garden organically but I do use a weedkiller on the weeds I can't easily dig up.

We make lots of compost and I am hoping to be able to spread it on the vegetable patches and around the soft fruits soon.

I prefer organic as I believe it is kinder to us and to wildlife and also I think it is cheaper. I can't afford to buy all these ready made products. We have a friend who has a pet rabbit and she gives us the contents of the rabbit hutch to put on our compost and I have started asking the dog groomer for the clippings when we take our little dog to be groomed.

Apparently slugs and snails don't like hair clippings so I will be giving that a try on my veggie patch.

Blessings

But some do more carefully. Even the regulation on organic food is more strict than before. It's better to buy fresh veggies from an individual often of course.

Actually Shawn organic products are quite a bit different than traditional commercially grown products. Really that sounds odd because organic is how it has been done for thousands of years and only recently have fertilizers and pesticides been produced by manipulation the molecules of petroleum products. These products don't easily break down and many retain their potency for many years.

Organic crop helpers are all natural, break down quickly, and usually are specifically targeted to the problem that a cure is sought for. For example may organic pesticides are made with hot pepper extracts so they are effective, but they don't last long and since they are all natural they won't harm the environment at all. A remedy for Japanese beetles is milky spore which is a fungus that attacks the larva of those beetles. Once again it is all natural. Copper dust is a well known fungicide that is derived from copper oxide and is a natural product as well.

Hopefully you can see that there are big differences between the two. And when you buy them in the store you will see a big difference in price as well.

I agree. I don't think many realize that this happens. I love fruits and veges. I do not have a green thumb, but this last year my husband planted some tomatoes and green peppers for me. They turned out great! I would like to add some more veg this year and see how it goes. We have lemon trees, satsuma trees, and black berry bushes in our yard. I'm hoping I can eventually have an organic garden, but one step at a time. :)
