• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I was going to say that it could also be the acids in the citrus. Some people are more sensitive to them than others.
Yes, I am not sure if I am allergic to citrus 'cos sometimes it doesn't cause me any harm but this time it did maybe 'cos I was already having that problem and after eating orange or plum I got a dry mouth. So I guess it was a combination of both the factors. I changed the toothpaste 2 days back, and it's normal now. :)

I had citrus allergy, though I had worse corn/dairy allergies so I didn't notice. Until one day I put lemon oil on the furniture (I hadn't done that in years and years) and wow, did I have a reaction.

My best friend and another efriend have citrus allergy as well. The efriend had arthritis symptoms. She went off citrus and the arthritis disappeared.

As for your toothpaste, check the ingredients to see if there's anything citrus derived in it. If you don't know, post it here -- I would recognize it.

You might be reacting to something else in the toothpaste. Almost no toothpaste is corn free. There are typically chemicals that you might be reacting to as well.

Have you tried Tom's of Maine brands of toothpaste? They tend to be pretty safe.

If by chance the only toothpastes that work for you are Arm and Hammer or Tom's Children's Silly Strawberry, be very very suspicious of a corn allergy. Those are the only two I know of that are corn-free.

Also, you can be allergic to some forms of citrus and not others. I was fine with everything but lemons and limes. I never reacted to oranges, clementines, bergamot, or anything else. And sometimes people are just allergic to citric acid, whether it's made from citrus, corn or molasses.

Hello,

I have noticed that whenever I eat an orange daily for 2-3 days I get a sore mouth. I am wondering is it some kind of allergy and many people have it?? :o

If you get sore, then it's the acid.
Citrus allergies show as (at least in my case) tingling and red, itchy skin.

Fruit are very important in a diet as they supply all the vitamins, minerals and fiber that the body needs to maintain strength and health. Fruits are some of the most nutritious food groups. This is especially true for citrus which are rich in vitamin C and are recommended as an important inclusion to the diet by most doctors. But not everyone is able to consume fruit as some people find that taking fruits can cause allergic reactions in their bodies. This allergy is quite rare and thankfully very mild. People who suffer from citrus fruit allergy are advised to stay away from fruits and derive the vital nutrients present in them through alternative foods and supplements. Fruit allergies are primarily type 1 contact allergy in which the oral area is affected the most. The common fruit allergy symptoms are: ulcers inside the mouth, tongue and lips; constriction of throat due to swelling, itching and irritation in the throat; tingling sensation in the inner cheeks and lips; rashes on various parts of the body, hives; watery eyes that may itch; cold and flu symptoms, sneezing, coughing and wheezing; vomiting; respiratory complications, asthma attack and difficulty in breathing; diarrhea; cramps in the abdominal region. You should immediately see a doctor if you have this allergy. Though the symptoms are usually mild, anaphylactic symptoms may be experienced by some. Treatment should be made available immediately. For the milder symptoms, antihistamines are administered and if there are skin rashes and hives, topical lotions and creams containing corticosteroids may be recommended. If there has been an asthma attack or respiratory problems, bronchodilators are used. If unavoidable circumstances, peeling off the skin of the fruit may help decrease chances of developing citrus fruit allergies. Freshly picked citrus fruits are better than those that are very ripe.

..thanks Mr.Google.:D

It could be an allergy as I used to have this problem with eating tomatoes. If I ate a tomato for several days in a row I got mouth ulcers. When the allergist did food testing on me I was slightly allergic to tomatoes (a 1 on a scale of 1-4) so the doc said I could eat them in moderation. In citrus it could also be the acids.
I too have a toothpaste allergy & it is to the Flouride! Developed it a few years back. It caused intense itching & burning around my lips. When I switched to non-fluoride toothpaste it went away. The Tom's of Maine brand sells a fluoride-free paste which can be found in most drugstores or online. There are also other brands which can be found online. Fluoride allergy was causing what my doc called "peri-oral dermatitis". So you might give a fluoride-free toothpaste a try. If your symptoms go away then that might be your problem.
Best of luck!
