When we come to salvation, become born-again, we hand over our life to our Lord Jesus Christ; and our will and purpose in our new life is to glorify HIM, have an objective to lead a Christ-centred, active Godly life daily, serving and loving our Lord Jesus Christ and others through our obedience and discipline to His Word and HIM.
This explanation sounds so easy, and many try to make a new born again life as simple. But the enemies of our life, such as: our sinful nature of self; Satan; Satans forces of demons; and Satans children are always there working away in the background ready to steal and destroy anything that is good and positive.
As sad as it is, many Christians are blinded to the facts of Spiritual Warfare, and suffer from deception and seduction by Satans aggressive and subtle offensive and defensive strategy that any reality of his presence through his principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual hosts are completely ignored and fobbed off by false teaching and beliefs.
There are many dimensions in Spiritual Warfare, but for the basic Christian of today, we need to understand that demonisation is a demonic process, and is true fact of Christian life as we become sober and vigilant of the wiles of the enemy, learn how to overcome and conquer it, and avoid inhabitation by demons (see Matthew 12:43-45; Luke 11:24-26 & 13:11-16; & 1 Cor. 5:5).
There has been much debate on whether a Christian can be demonised or not in these last days of perilous times. But, it doesnt make any difference how His Word is twisted and distorted to prove the case of those against such beliefs. But it has been known for 2000 years that a believer can become demonised. Demonisation is the process and state of being influenced, controlled, and eventually being inhabited by a demon.
Demonisation varies in different degrees and duration. We know that Satan and his forces of demons and demonised people attempted to influence our Lord Jesus Christ during His temptation, persecution and crucifixion.
It had been established from past writings and experiences over hundreds of years that there are different types and stages of demonisation in believers and non-believers, such as: oppression; obsession; suppression; and possession.
Oppression is the state, or process of being tempted spiritually with a sense of being weighed down physically and psychologically, as in the case of a Christian being disturbed, tormented, or harassed by demons. Possible symptoms of oppression are: anxiety; depression; anger; bitterness; unforgiveness; guilt; shame; heaviness; obstruction; discouragement; etc., that affects our soul. Its a cruel, unjust, burdensome, and harsh assignment through the demonic power of darkness.
Obsession is a persistent, besetting, disturbing, dominating preoccupation, action or influence of an often unreasonable, persistent, and unnatural feeling or idea that a person cannot escape. Its a result of demonic intrusion into the life of a believer or non-believer, impelling them to preoccupy themself with certain ideas, emotions, attitudes, or actions from outside and becomes a serious stronghold. For an example, King Saul was repeatedly oppressed by a demon in his life as he became obsessed by the thought of killing David because he was filled with jealousy and consumed by his hatred of David; though he had previously been anointed by the Spirit and prophesied over (see 1 Samuel 10:1, 9-13).
Suppression is where a Christian expresses a conscious inhibition of an impulse that keeps them in repression, and they seem to be continually stopped from: reading His Word; praying; and building up a relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ.
Possession is the act or state of being dominated or possessed by an extra-ordinary influence, such as an impulsive attitude or idea; or extraneous personality or action. Demonic possession by demons occurs mostly among non-believers and pseudo believers, who are subject to the control by the kingdom of darkness.
Demonic oppression, obsession, and suppression of a believer is like an illegal occupation of a persons urban house that has a vacant sign posted outside on the letterbox. Satan and his forces by spiritual rights have no rightful occupation in the soul of a born-again believer, whose life belongs to our Lord Jesus Christ. They are righteous when they are saved, but when they become unrighteous they then give spiritual rights to Satans forces to take up residence and occupy their soul, their house.
Through wilful disobedience and lack of discipline, rebellion, and persistent and ongoing sins in their life, then they give ground for demons to dwell in their empty, swept, and put in order house (Matt. 12:43-45). These demons act like squatters and breed like rats in the garbage of our life that is stored within our soul, such as our: anger; bitterness; hurts; offences; resentfulness; hatred; jealousy; pride; unforgiveness; etc., etc.
An example from His Word is of Judas, who repeatedly stole money (John 12:6) and had first allowed Satan to enter his heart. This eventually led to his betrayal of our Lord Jesus Christ and his suicide (John 13:2, 27). Another example from the Bible is of Ananias and Sapphira, who stole and lied (Acts 5:2). Many similar cases have been seen over the past decade of leaders of churches and evangelists who were obsessed with sexual immorality and sinful practices for a long period of time during their ministry, and were later driven to moral corruption and spiritual defeat as they fed their sin.
How Can We Become Demonised?
Human beings are basically a body, soul, and spirit. The soul has a holistic unity with a three-dimensional functionality, that is, one person with a composite personality of physio-psycho-spiritual aspects that manifests through different stages of our soul, such as: our carnal mind (our brain); will; pride; conscious; emotional feelings; etc.
But, as we fill our soul, our house, with His Word and our Lord Jesus Christ; and cleanse our house through confession, repentance, and forgiveness, then our will, pride and emotional feelings over overcomed and conquered, then our spiritual mind, our heart, will be transformed and renewed, and we no longer conform to the world.
The following is a possible list of symptoms derived from Biblical cases of demonisation, and personal experiences:
1. Physical Changes:
a. Negative changes: Physiological disorder or physical infirmities, such as: paralysis and crippling infirmities; blindness; dumbness; convulsions; foaming at the mouth; falling or fainting; altered voice and personality, etc.
b. Positive changes: Superhuman strength and power
2. Psychological changes:
a. Negative changes: Fear, restlessness, anger, bitterness, resentfulness, anxiety, depression, defiance, rebellion, volitional weakness, anti-social and destructive thinking and attitudes, suicidal thinking, etc.
b. Positive changes: Mediumistic abilities or extraordinary power and knowledge, such as: moving objects; fortune telling; psychic healing; etc.
3. Spiritual changes:
a. Personal: Blasphemous thoughts, inability to concentrate on Bible reading or Christian exercise, transference, hatred, and fear of our Lord Jesus Christ, resistant to spiritual things, unusual reaction to our Lord Jesus Christ or His Name, ineptness for true knowledge of sin, religious doubt, lack of peace or joy that is persistent, loss of faith, lack of spiritual growth or exhibit spiritual decline, inability to pray, spiritually impotent, etc.
b. Collective changes: Causing discord, dissension, and strife among Christians, disruption of praise and worship, and services, and causing a church to split.
How Can I be Free From Demonisation?
We can be freed from demonisation, but we will always suffer from oppression and long as we live, because this is part and parcel of Christian life as we run the race of endurance along the narrow path. There are many wide gates on The Way.
Our Spiritual Warfare against Satan, self, and sin is constant and persistent as Satans forces walk around like a roaring lion seeking to tempt us to sin, and we can never drop our guard at any time. While we keep the complete Armour of God on, withstand and stand, and keep submitting to our Lord Jesus Christ, then they will flee.
Christians need to be aware, beware, be warned, be sober, and be vigilant, and NEVER be unaware of much false teaching that decks the foyers of the Body of Christ.
