Hi, in another thread, I was told that Quakers will not answer questions about their beliefs.

Having talked to Quakers about their beliefs, I know that this is not true so I want to give Quakers an opportunity to respond for themselves.

Just one simple question and it is not a trick or any kind of trap, bait, flame, etc. I just want to show this person that Quakers are not secretive about their beliefs.

Yes or no: do Quakers believe that Jesus Christ was raised on the third day?

Depends on which Quaker you're asking. lol I don't personally believe in a literal resurrection, at least not a physical one.

like one of the posters said it depends on the Quaker you speak to. we dont have set creeds. I personaly do. there are some Quakers that will say they would rather be called Quakers then christians. which says a lot to me.

Most quakers will Answer questions but we do not like creedal statements, they limit God.

Did Jesus rise on the third day? Yes.
You are the first person I've seen in years to make that simple statement of TRUTH.

Yahweh be PRAISED FOREVER ! YES !

Cool, this thread's on a roll ! (JOYFUL, Unexpected, Serendipitis)

I met with quakers (I think, it was decades ago)
and they were almost the ONLY group out of hundreds(of those groups called "chrstian") in the last 50 years
that were peaceful....
..
Like you said; that says a lot !

There are three main bodies of Quakers. Friends General Conference, which exists largely on the East Coast and in various college towns is the most liberal theologically, although probably the most conservative in terms of having traditional Quaker unprogrammed worship. Many FGC Friends I've met would not care one way or another about the resurrection and many are universalists. The other two bodies are Evangelical Friends International, the most conservative group, located mainly in the Western states, and Friends United Meeting (which I grew up in), which is the largest group and serves as something of a middle ground (although probably leaning more towards EFI). Some EFI meetings have been so effected by modern American Evangelicalism that they have lost some of what it means to be Quaker-- ie, the peace testimony. I think most EFI and FUM friends would answer "yes" to a literal resurrection.

Quakers, by the way, are not Anabaptists. In fact, they don't water baptize at all, and they have a different theological lineage. Anabaptists began in Germany, while Quakers began in England. The two are often confused because both tend to be pacifistic, and both tended, at least at one time, to promote simplicity of dress and life.

As for Quakers being evasive theologically, there's an old saying that "If you've met one Quaker... you've met one Quaker." They can tend to be almost as diverse as Baptists.

Ah just a little thing there-- ana-baptists didn't begin in Germany.. they began with Jesus and His disciples and have been around since b4 Catholicism got off the ground! Anyway.. I know this isn't the kind of ana-baptists in this forum.. cos the statement of faith is for mennonites.. and that is different from alot of the churches that re-baptised which were also non-universalists.

I know if I mention the Trail of Blood you guys don like that.. but the markers of biblical churches are what the booklet is trying to show..

1- Independent christian churches that have been in every age since Christ
2- They have been persecuted for their beliefs and cut off
3- They are mostly missionary focussed

These are markers of real churches, that you can see in the New Testament

Friends aren't Anabaptists strictly speaking, since as a group they do not practice water baptism, but consider the only baptism that is important to be spiritual baptism. They allow a great deal of freedom, however, and do not object if an individual Friend wants to be baptized in water.

Because Friends are historical peace churches and share quite a bit with Anabaptists, and have historically lived together in harmony in the US since colonial times, and since neither group is large enough at CF to have its own forum, nor do we really want to be separated and isolated from each other, we share a forum here.

Ironically, the SoF was not something we chose for ourselves. The staff made it up for us and locked it. We never got much enthusiasm for asking to make one for ourselves, since SoFs here at CF are mostly used to exclude people, and the idea of excluding people was distasteful to a lot of us.

But this forum is for Anabaptists and Friends, not just Mennonites.

I'm a somewhat new Quaker, but I would agree that it definitely depends on which Friend you ask the question. But I'd bet that whatever the response, it would be genuine and theologically intelligent, which is very refreshing.

Personally, having studied the Gospels as ancient texts, I would say YES Jesus either rose or appeared to have risen. Certain Gospels convey that He physically rose, while others convey that He was not in his physical human form.

This subject leads me to other questions such as What does it mean to be Children of the Light? and, What did Christ mean when he said that "death will not touch you?" ...so many questions, so little time...

Thank the Lord for this forum!!

Hello all,

I am not a Quaker, but my wife's 1st cousin is a Quaker (Evangelical Friends) minister. He believes and teaches a literal resurrection. He and I have discussed many topics through the years and he has never been secretive or evasive. He does not come to this website, but if you have a question, I could pass it on.
