A leading supporter quietly removed the obliterated remnants of The Satanic Temple statue of an occult deity after vandals destroyed it overnight Monday at State House Plaza.
State Rep. Ellen Read, D-Newmarket, first invited the Salem, Mass.-based organization to bring its display to provide a celebration of secularism to balance out the religious holiday showings.
She came back to State House Plaza early Tuesday morning and placed what was left of the crumpled statue into the back of her red sedan.
Read turned the remnants over to Satanic Temple executives and said the group will decide whether to bring another icon back to the property since it has a permit to display one that runs past Christmas.
