The estranged husband of a nurse who recently strangled an intruder in her southeast Portland home has been arrested for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder, authorities said Thursday.

Michael J. Kuhnhausen was arrested early Thursday morning, according to police, who declined to comment on whether his arrest is related to the burglary.

"Unfortunately, PPB Detectives cannot release any information regarding Kuhnhausen's case as the investigation is still underway and any release of information at this point could potentially compromise the integrity of the case," said Portland Police Det. Paul Dolbey.

Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, returned home from work last Wednesday to find an intruder in her house.

During an intense struggle with convicted felon Edward Dalton Haffey, the nurse strangled him in self-defense, police said. Haffey apparently attacked the woman with a hammer.

My my, how the tides have turned. This is sick, and yet twisted and ironic at the same time.

funny, this happened 50 miles north of me....

kudos to the nurse for defending herself!

I've read this news and for the life of me...the sheer stupidity of the hit man floored me. I can't think of any criminal that would carry a day planner that would obviously point out the person hiring them for murder.

I remembered reading that the nurse is several pounds heavier than the hit man and had more experience dealing with violent patients...so it came in handy. Nevermind that the hit man was old and out of shape.

And I can't imagine how she felt when she found out that her husband betrayed her and sought to kill her. Hard to comprehend.
