Hello,

I am in the process of planting a church in a new location, and I would love to have help choosing a name. Here is what I'm looking for:

1. Must appeal to secular community - try to avoid names using "insider" terms like "Elim" or "Bethany"

2. Should be unique, but accessible.

3. Should indicate a spiritual emphasis without being "churchy".

4. Think like someone who has not attended church. What name would make you think "these are a bunch of loons!" and what name would make you think "even though I've never been to a church, I'm not intimidated by this one".

Other information about the church: We're setting it up like a coffee house (I know that's becoming cliche, but it's new to this area and in a relatively affluent area, so I think it will be our best option presently) and the community is centered around a lake, so lake related names or coffee house related names might be cool. I also want to keep the option open of dropping the coffee house, so something that can be used either way would be preferable (like "lounge" rather than "coffee house").

THANKS!!

Hi gma4h,

Christ's fellowship of.... (whatever the name of your town, area or lake that defines your area of ministry.

For ex: Christ's fellowship of Sky Lake. It would be in keeping with the names of the first fellowships in Paul's day. Would not lead anyone to misunderstand who you worship and keeps clear of all denominational ties.

Of course, to be completely in keeping with the new covenant naming of the fellowships you could use: The church of Jesus at Sky Lake or Jesus' church at Sky Lake. Finally, you could be exactly like the new covenant church was called and just be the church at Sky Lake. However, in this day and age the last choice might be taken as ambiguous concerning who you serve.

God bless you.
In Christ, Ted

I think I would keep it simple, and call it Christ's Church, but call it Coffee Church informally.

I can't see anyone being intimidated by that.

:)

If it's near a dam, you could call it The Dam Church..... Haha!
Seriously, I don't like "coffee worship lounge" bc it sounds like you're worshiping coffee.....
How about something simple like His Place? Oohh or Common Ground.....

If you're already compromising to suit worldy people then how can you expect Gods Spirit to move in this? The preaching of the gospel is foolishness to the unsaved no matter what your church is named. Pray about it, and let the Lord lead you.

Where is the compromise?? Is coffee anti-gospel?

Of course it is. Coffee has caffeine which is a known stimulant. The subliminal message being sent here is Christ is not sufficient to meet all of our needs be they physical, spiritual, or emotional. An extra-biblical component is needed to stimulate us to service; i.e. caffeine. We as the temples of the living God must be ever sober and vigilant to keep our temple purified by carefully watching what we're placing in it be it physical, spiritual, or emotional. Ergo, coffee is not only anti-gospel, it is evil and must be purged from our righteous bodies so we may be presented to our King of Kings as unblemished lambs...

...or something like that.

*gently removes tongue from cheek*

We're not compromising anything. The gospel will be preached just like it would be in a church with a "churchy" name. If anything, we're answering the call of the gospel - to tear down the barrier that makes "insiders" and "outsiders" and share with all the love and forgiveness of Christ. Thanks anyway, though.

First ask God if HE wants you to establish that church then ask HIM to give you a name.

This is the product of two years of prayer. The church has been meeting without a name for 18 months. We're ready to organize the service differently, and we're praying for a name. We've prayed for months, we've looked at other church names, we've even looked on the internet, and we have not found the right one.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm still open. Please, though, avoid assumptions about how we're starting or what we might possibly be doing wrong.
