Ok..i am so sorry for being such a pain in the butt!! lol

For those that have been paying attention. I was born and raised Catholic. I spent 12 yrs at various Protestant denominations, then went BACK to the Catholic church for the past 4-5 yrs. Just recently we have been attending a Methodist church for the past 5 weeks. I thought we had decided and were staying there..i even changed my little faith icon to Methodist a couple days ago. Now today hubby tells me he wants to maybe check out the Nazarene and Wesleyan churches in the area before deciding for sure!! lol

Anyhoo..anyone know a website or a good link where i can get background on all 3....Methodist, Nazarene and Wesleyan? Anywhere that shows the history and why the Nazarenes and the Wesleyans split off the Methodist church?? i would really appreciate it..thanks.

ok..maybe i need to ask even more specific questions. I am wondering why the Nazarene church branched off the Methodist church and how many differences there are. I am wondering if the Wesleyan church branched off the Methodists or off the Nazarenes and what different beliefs they might have? any help appreciated.

Before the Civil War is was just Methodists, then Wesleyans broke off over slavery. I think that Nazarenes are a split off of Wesleyans?
You do know that slavery was banned before the Civil War, right? The Civil War was fought to protect the Union from seperating.

The Wikipedia (strange name but great resource) at http://en.wikipedia.org is an online encyclopedia, and gives good individual history accounts for the denominations. Just place the names in the search field one at a time.

I may be wrong - and if I am - someone please correct me - but I think that the major differences between Methodist and Nazarene congregations are more administrative/practical than the actual belief/theology. In fact, any charts that I have ever seen comparing religions has just one column for Wesleyan/Methodist/Nazarene. In some, all holiness churches are together in one basket, including Salvation Army, etc.

You can also get great information, although maybe more than you want at this point, by going to the individual denominational websites.

Hope this helps.

With the arrival ofthe Holiness Movement, Bresee began to feel a sense of doubt and dissatisfaction while in the Methodist Church. He questioned whether Methodism had helped him to answer the questions of destiny and God. From this doubt, Bresee decided to build a system of beliefs based on Faith, Revelation, Atonement, New Birth, and Destiny that would answer his questions and develop his personal Christian beliefs. Bresee assured himself that these beliefs were true, and with this new system of beliefs, he sought a renewed religious experience with God. Soon he became Baptized in the Holy Spirit which "took away his tendencies to worldliness, anger, and pride" as well as doubt (Smith, 94).

The UMC is a Mainline Protestant church, probably the most conservative of the major ones but still on the average pretty liberal. Nazarenes sprang from methodism but are more evangelical in nature. Not sure about Weslayans-think they're a smaller sect.

We're not that kind of Church of Christ. The Churches of Christ in Christian Union are a holiness Church very similar to Nazarene.

Welcome to Wesley's Parish! Your welcome to post here with us, as your denomination (CCCU) is part of Wesley's Parish. I'm somewhat fimilar with the CCCU, there's quite a few congregations here in Ohio. :)
