Begin by being a missionary where you live now. Here is what Jesus told his disciples just before his return to Heaven:
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
(Acts 1:8 ESV)

They were told to begin where they were, in Jerusalem. Also they needed the power of the Holy Spirit to enable them to be witnesses for Jesus. You need to spend time communicating with God through prayer and Bible study so you can have this power.

If you aren't a member of a Bible believing church you need to join one and become involved in it. Missionary work isn't something you can do alone; you need to be involved with other Christians. If you are faithful in doing the work God is giving you to do now God will open up other opportunities, perhaps including being sent to other countries to preach the gospel.

How does one go about getting into being a missionary into foreign lands? I have no clue what a believer is supposed to do or how to go about doing this, so any ideas?

Charity begins at home. You have to start from somewhere. Pray, fast, seek God and start serving Him at a local church first.

As others have said, it begins in the home. From there, it should spread to your community, those who live around you.

People associate mission trips with going to foreign lands such as Africa or Asia. Well, you could embark on a missionary trip across the street or across the yard. We are given a myriad of opportunities to serve each and every day. It's good that you want to do this, but I think it's best to start out locally before you dive right in and travel thousands of miles.

Most people who go on mission work out of country feel "called" to. Like an urge. And usually to a specific place. Like my friend years ago suddenly felt compelled to go to the Philippines. She couldn't explain it. But none the less she ended up going there and loved it. Now shes back there again for the next two years doing missionary work at a childrens orphanage.

first become a missionary to your neighbors, co-workers, friends and family, and your enemies; then if God wants you to be a missionary in a foreign land, you'll be ready to receive His specific leading as to where and how

I have little desire to do missionary work, but I'm sold out for Jesus and I want to get as many souls to come to Christ as possible, so I'll go if I have to.
In a sense you are already going into all of the world by being on the internet. This forum might not be a good one for winning souls because most of the people here are already Christians but there are many forums where you will come in contact with a lot of unsaved people.

I've preached on other boards, they just mock me.

People will do the same thing if you preach to them in person. When you post something it will be read by other people besides the ones who respond to you. You might be having a good effect on them even if they don't respond.

Our job is to plant seeds. When someone plants a seed in the ground there is a lot of activity within the seed as it begins to grow but the person who planted the seeds doesn't see any of it. The same thing is true when we plant the seed of God's word. It might seem as if nothing is happening but it is possible that God is at work and the seed we plant will produce results that will be harvested by someone else.

True but people tend to be nicer in person.

That is true, xbone. Forums like these serve their purpose, but it can't really compare with meeting and speaking face to face. Look at what Christ did. Sure, He didn't have an interent forum to post blogs on or whatever. But He could have easily simply preached from afar and not get involved in people's sinful and often messy lives. But He did, often times going into their homes, comforting/teaching them face to face.

As humans we all yearn for some sort of contact such as this, although our modern era of technology has made it increasingly difficult.

It can be very gratifying to our ego to want to 'save poor devils' - unfortunately reality can often be very different.
Missionaries have westernised as well as 'preached the gospel' all over the world and that isn't right.
1 Cor 3:16 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.

We can be deluded into thinking that we can 'save' people. I grew up knowing we can't then went to churches that told you we can. We can't.

You might have an evangelical gift, why don't you pray. (God might want you preaching the gospel, travel might be part of that - find out.) Bible bashing does more harm then good, following christ however can take you all sorts of places. If God gives you a 'mission' - trust him. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread, however. Be encouraged, if you have a desire in this area, who knows what God might have in store for you.
I'm a missionary. You can be one in your own home. It's service. You can't own anyone, this I think is where the idea tends to go pear shaped. Serve and love - we are 'ministers' of the gospel. The objective is to enable them to walk with God, not shelter them from the world or keep them safe from hell ('save' them.) Once you fall into that trap, you run yourself ragged.
God is love - ask and you shall receive.

I've felt the call to join a mission ministry to India. God's timing is perfect and you will know when it is your time. Not everyone will be receptive to your message whether here or in a third world country. Your job is to try and get the word to as many as you can. Some of course may not believe you, people didn't believe our Lord and Saviour when he was here in the flesh.

I suggest starting with those around you! If and when God wants you to travel you will know the time.
