like schindlers list, someone who seeks to do what G_d says to do will simply do it and even often cry deeply because they cannot do more.
however, watching (outwardly) may not reveal (inwardly) since
motives could range from greed(bad) or pride (bad) to simple obedience(good) [obedience to scripture] and honoring G_d(good).
those whose lives are immersed in Yahshua have always been willing to share in the suffering and die in place of others, as He Himself did, even in place of their enemies (like some believers during the holocaust who could have saved their own lives at the cost of another's, but didn't because the testimony of Yahshua was true in them,)
today, all over the world, selfishness and pride and self-preservation take first seat for those who are lost, leaving G_d's Word second or third or out of the picture entirely. Yahshua said G_d must be first, no other, and few are there who find the Way to Life. so most if not all examples on tv etc are ( ... ) [test for yourself by Scripture in obedience and honor of Yhwh] .

I can't give you a good historical answer but I can tell you how I first became interested in Quakerism - yes it does actually relate to your question! I read a children's book called Thee, Hannah by Margurite D'Angeli. The little girl in the story objected to wearing the quaker bonnet until the day a negro slave on the run for freedom approached her on the strength of it. She was able to lead him to people who could help him. The idea that the distinctiveness of one's attire could stand for freedom, individual accountability & godliness left an indelible impression on me. I was an impressionable kid but although I'm sure there were plenty of mixed motives involved & I know very little of American history it still strikes me that plenty of courage was need edto stand against the main thrust of society at that time.

While this was written by 4th & 5th graders it's still worth a peek.

It is interesting that the "Christiana Resistance" happened on a Sept 11. My wife has family in that town, and I wasn't even aware of it happening.

From what I understand Quakers take the line "there is no man, no woman, slave or master...only brothers and sisters in christ"(badly re-worded) from the bible seriously.

as a result, quaker women were traditionally much more educated than others during the 1800's and there were many quaker leaders who were women. Also, the underground railroad sprung from that idea of total equality among people.

Jehane, loved that story!!!
