I do think it is authentic after reading 2 publications back in the 90s & as a result of a concept from my stratigraphy class in grad school. First there was this anthropologist who did study on various pollens & bacteria from the shroud that correlated with the geography. The next book examined the stains of blood from the shroud. These were not part of the 1978 study (how did they miss that). Anyway i think the blood was B- or AB- & some anthropological research indicates that most Jewish people have these blood types. In addition, the bloodline is actually traced thru the mother's side & I think this refers to the idea that Mary & Joseph were distant cousins. Now from grad school we were studying radioisotope dating. The history of the shroud was such that it had been exposed to an incident of fire in one of the places it was stored. Whenever something is exposed to combustion it resets the carbon clock on the material. This is why when they did the original study the clock had been reset so that it was showing 14th century.
