Mark 9:44-46 - Inspired Scripture or Not?
Mark 9:44 - 46 - WHERE THEIR WORM DIETH NOT, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED. 45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, INTO THE FIRE THAT NEVER SHALL BE QUENCHED; 46 WHERE THEIR WORM DIETH NOT, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.
Verses 9:44 and 46 are found in the Majority of all existing Greek manuscripts as well as A, D plus another 20 uncial copies. It is also found in the Old Latin copies, the Latin Vulgate and the Clementine Vulgate, the Syriac Palestinian, Harkelian, the Ethiopic, Slavonic and the Gothic ancient versions. It is the reading in the Modern Greek Bibles used throughout the Greek speaking world in the Orthodox churches today.
Both these verses were in the Wycliffe Bible of 1395, Tyndale 1525, Coverdale 1535, the Great Bible 1540, Matthews Bible 1549, the Bishops Bible 1568, the Geneva Bible 1587 and the King James Bible of 1611.
The verses are included in the Anglo-Saxon Gospels Corpus Christi Mss. 140 circa 1000 A.D. Though we cannot read it, it was obviously in this predecessor to the English Bibles - Mark 9:44 þar hyra wyrm ne swylt & fyr ne bið acwenced; Mark 9:45 And gif ðin fot swicað þe ceorf hine of. betere þe is þt þu healt gá. on écé lif þonne þu hæbbe twegen fet & si aworpen on helle un-acwencedlices fyres. Mark 9:46 þar hyra wyrm ne swylt ne fyr ne bið adwæsced"
The verses are included in the NKJV 1982, Youngs 1898, the Third Millenium Bible 1998, Mace N.T. 1729, the Emphatic Diaglott 1865, Murdock Translation 1851, Living Oracles 1835, Websters translation 1833, and Paul Espositos English Majority Text 2002.
These two verses are omitted primarily by the Catholic manuscript Vaticanus, and Sinaiticus. The NASBs from 1963, 1972 and 1973 entirely omitted these two verses from their text, but then in 1977 and again in 1995 they put them back in the text but this time [in brackets] indicating doubt as to their authenticity. So, NASB scholars, Are they inspired Scripture or not? Make up your minds please. Then the NASB informs us in their footnotes that these two verses are omitted in the best ancient manuscripts. What they really mean is that they are omitted in Vaticanus, and if you want to know the true nature of these so called oldest and best manuscripts simply take a look here to see what these best Mss. are really like -

The verses were found without brackets in the former Catholic Douay-Rheims Bible of 1582 and 1899 and in the Catholic Douay of 1950. You can see these verses for yourself in the 1582 Catholic Rheims, as well as Wycliffe, Tyndale, Cranmer, and the Geneva Bible here -

But since the Evangelicals got into bed with the Catholics in forming the UBS critical texts, the more modern Catholic versions like the St. Joseph NAB 1979 and the New Jerusalem Bible 1985 omit these two verses from their bibles as do the RSV, ESV, NIV, NET and the Jehovah Witness New World Translation.
However the Holman Standard 2003 and the up and coming ISV (it the wretched thing ever gets off the ground) put the verses back in the text once again.
The verses are also included in Luthers German Bible 1545 and the German Elberfelder of 1905 - Verse 44. da ihr Wurm nicht stirbt und ihr Feuer nicht verlöscht. 45. Ärgert dich dein Fuß, so haue ihn ab. Es ist dir besser, daß du lahm zum Leben eingehest, denn daß du zwei Füße habest und werdest in die Hölle geworfen, in das ewige Feuer, 46. da ihr Wurm nicht stirbt und ihr Feuer nicht verlöscht.

They are in the French Martin 1744, the Louis Segond of 1910 and the French Ostervald of 1996 - 44. Où leur ver ne meurt point, et où le feu ne s'éteint point.45. Et si ton pied te fait tomber, coupe-le; il vaut mieux pour toi que tu entres dans la vie, n'ayant qu'un pied, que d'avoir deux pieds, et d'être jeté dans la géhenne, dans le feu qui ne s'éteint point,46. Où leur ver ne meurt point, et où le feu ne s'éteint point.
They are found in the Spanish Sagradas Escrituras of 1569, the Reina Valera of 1602, 1909, 1960 and 1995, the Reina Valera Gomez of 2004 as well as the 1997 La Biblia de las Américas put out by the Lockman Foundation, the same people who give us the fickle NASBs. - 44 donde el gusano de ellos no muere, y el fuego nunca se apaga. 45 Y si tu pie te fuere ocasión de caer, córtalo; mejor te es entrar a la vida cojo, que teniendo dos pies ser echado en el infierno, al fuego que no puede ser apagado, 46 donde el gusano de ellos no muere, y el fuego nunca se apaga.
They are also in the Afrikaans bible 1953, the Aramaic Pe[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]ta 1905, the Albanian bible, the Breton Gospels, the Dutch Staten Vertaling bible, the Romanian Cornilescu, the Russian Synodal Version, the Chinese Union Versions both the Traditional and the Simplified, the Modern Greek N.T. used throughout the Greek Orthodox churches and even in the Modern Hebrew bible that includes the New Testament.
Only the Catholic Connection bibles remove these verses from Holy Scripture, and not even consistently among themselves.
