I have a crucifix as part of my home prayer altar and on the Rosary hanging from the truck’s rear view mirror has one but I wear a simple cross daily just because it’s more comfortable. The cross is made of polished shell and the neck strap is a string made of leather.

Do any of you Lutherans wear a Crucifix necklace or is that a Catholic thing?

Very common in my parish, and from what I have seen all of our LCC and LCMS parishes.

if any, then rare: I've not seen one I can recall over our 11 years. You see crosses.

I would say you have not been looking, or have been hanging around pietists and crypto-calvinists.

Oh yeah! I wear a big pectoral crucifix as a part of my clerical clothing, and it's perfectly common for Lutherans to wear crucifix necklaces or display crucifixes in their homes, just as we do in church. It's not a Roman Catholic thing — it's often used by Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Lutherans, and Anglicans, and although many Protestants have an aversion to it, I also think many don't.

One thing to consider, perhaps, is that you'll often find that crucifixes have denomination-specific details, such as the Eastern Orthodox bottom line, or the Roman Catholic St. Benedict symbol etc.

There are even Lutheran rosaries, but they are not too common, I think. We don't use the Roman Catholic rosary.

Is it even common for members of the LCMS, specifically?

Yes, absolutely! Just have a look at their Instagram pictures, for example: Login • Instagram
Oh, I know that some LCMS churches have them in their churches, I just want to make sure the LCMS wear them as necklaces. I asked my pastor and he said that he probably sees more plain crosses on people than Crucifixes but that he doubts people differentiate between the two. Then he said that he wears a Crucifix ring….but nobody notices his ring.

Or...just a different city maybe. I doubt anyone here has anything for or against having a crucifix necklace instead of a cross necklace, but merely they simply have crosses. And they aren't as judgmental as you are imagining actually, as they tend to be pretty accepting of differences. You don't want to imagine what isn't there, nor be judgmental yourself, right. Our own local congregation has actually quite a few people that grew up in different churches, including Pentecostal, Catholic, Baptist, and more, along with of course a majority that grew up Lutheran.

Yeah, I just don’t want to be wearing one if it’s not common or proper.

I can’t think of anything more proper than Christ crucified, so no need to worry! :)

You are making way to much out of something that is Adiaphora. It is neither mandated nor forbidden. I assure you that it is both common and proper.

Maybe see it more often in Parishes that have a crucifix on their Altar... Which brings up another point; where did Lutherans get the idea that it's OK to remove the crucifix and replace it with a bare, empty cross... (If their Altar has a Statue of Christ showing the wounds of the crucifixion, maybe a bare cross is OK).

What did St. Paul wright?: "we worship Christ Crucified".

Be a witness, just like St. Paul, and show others that you to are a Christian because you worship Christ Crucified.

If any in your congregation take offense, they are acting like pietistic, legalistic protestants based on emotions rather than Scripture. They are the ones that are at odds with Scripture, not you.

Wear it while you can; here in Canada in the province of Quebec, you are not allowed to wear any visible religious symbols in your workplace. A truly evil socialist government prototype in the western developed country with all of the other countries gradually drifting in that direction. Quebec top court upholds most of religious symbols secularism bill

Wear it, when you doubt, touch it, and let it remind you of Christs boldness in proclaiming the Gospel, and his faithfulness to us, going to the cross for you and I so we don't have to!

God bless.

Do any LCMS Lutherans read the Devotional books by Sarah Young, the Jesus Calling series? They all have different names, the last one I got was today from Amazon, called Jesus Always. Anyway, I was wondering if it’s ok for LCMS to read them? My pastor isn’t a fan and said that the newer editions weren’t written the same as older ones, plus he doesn’t like that Young writes for Christ. Are they ok to read or not?
