cultus latriae - the worship God, and only God.

cultus duliae - the religious respect for persons (saints), places (Lourdes, Fatima etc), things (like respect for Cross or icons) because of their very close relations with God. But for Mary, as Mother of God, some times is used the word cultus hiperduliae.

Monica What is the difference in practice..? I do not think there is that big of a diference in practice, we think God can hear our prayers, and we think saints can hear our prayer, and I have heard some very elaborate and flowery prayers to saints just praising their goodness for line after line. I do not think the differance is so much in practice but in understanding. When you meet a great and powerful person, someone you really respect, some times you get accused of "hero worship" but you know that that person is only where they are because of the grace of God, without Him the saints would be nothing, all of the Saints, except for Our Lady who recieved special grace from God, were sinners and needed His forgiveness. We understand this

..what IS the difference?

by the way I'm asking about worship and veneration :)

I know there's a difference. I just think I need more information on this. What is the difference in practice..? I have my own idea but I'm wondering what the 'official' view is.

thanks

what is in your heart and what your intent is.

Also, when you see a priest offering Mass to Mary and not to God- then we have cross the line.

This is really the essential difference.

In outward practice, they can appear much the same, and so our protetant friends who don't understand the difference, judge on superficial appearances not realizing there is more to the story.

It is what is in the heart, what the heart's intention is.

Is it to give worship due God alone? That is Latria and can only be given to God alone.

Is it to give honor to creatures where honor is due as the bible commands? That is latria.

We see this in practice in cultures which are not so impacted by fundamentalist notions of protetantism (which seems to have its foothold in America).

In England, judges are called "your worship".

Does that mean people doing so believe the judge should be worshipped as God?

Of course not.

They are simply giving honor where honor is due. :)

We seen the same type of language used in the bible of people when it comes to prayer - something most protestants believe is an act of worship due God alone. In the bible there are several places where prayer is directed towards people - it simply means "to ask" and does not have to be associated with worship due God alone at all.

What I have noticed in my pryaers is that very often when I have come close to Our Lady, she instantly points me to Jesus!

But then she is with me, helping me to look upon Her Son.

What a grace we have in Mary.

btw, Mary says that she is blushing when I say this!
