  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Reading a book on church history it seems that Justin Martyr was at pains to show that Christianity had ancient roots that predated Greek philosophy (e.g. Plato). To do this he sought to show that Greek philosophy was derived from Moses teachings; that Plato had read Moses.

This was because of the prevalent idea that the best ideas were the mot ancient and critics of Christianity (like Celsus) attacked Christianity for being a recent novelty in rebellion against the religion of the Jews.

This made me think of Jesus' teaching:
He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’ ”
Lk 5:36-39 NIV

This seems to be saying that his teaching is new and better than the old

These days Christians can tend to prefer the old ways but not Jesus.
