Watched for the first time the TV movie "Bible" on the History Channel, Sunday evening. It portrayed John the Baptist's hair in dreadlocks, but he was baptizing properly, by immersion. :) Any thoughts on the dreads? I did a quick look and apparently in north Africa and that area some sort of dreads were worn in antiquity. Personally, I'm not convinced that men wore their hair down over their shoulders in Jesus' day anyway. ;)

Did he have blue eyes? Jesus always had blue eyes in the old Bible movies. This miniseries, like any, has to take some license with the script. I think they were probably looking for the best actor for the part.

I really want to see that show but I don't have cable and it is not on the history channel online. I can see John the Baptist having long nappy hair... he lived in the desert eating locust's and honey and was referred to as a wild man, I can't see a trip to the barber being on his priority list lol. Interesting thought though whether men of that time wore their hair down over their shoulders or not. If not I wonder where the idea came from that they did?

Thankfully he did not have blue eyes. Now Jesus, in this movie, has dark eyes and hair, not that effeminate looking, blue-eyed guy in some of the other movies. But, they did cast Jesus as a handsome man. I was rather pleasantly surprised at the 2 hours last night. They did have the 3 wise men showing up at the manger though. :D

This movie seems to be going over big, so I imagine it will end up on other channels in the future. On John's dreads.. it was not the typical dirty matting you'd think of on a man in the wilderness. These were done in a shop. :D It looked just like the dirty appearing dreads I see on some men today.

I did a little poking around on the internet the other day and it doesn't seem like a stretch for at least some men in that time and region to have had dreads or something close. It's a Hollywood production, I don't think they are trying to be super realistic about it all, they all do speak English after-all. ;)

I Googled a picture of him, I see what you mean about the dreads. If it is his real hair they could have put a wig on him.
Trentlogain2, I see the message as being most important too but I like to see/know what it was really like in Jesus' time. Not because it is really that important, but I simply like to know. They went into great detail for his clothes, they could have put a wig on his as well... the dreads do make him look out of place. I had a buddy who had dreads, ugly as they were it took him a lot of work to get them and to keep them, if I remember right he couldn't wash his hair like regular he had to clean it somehow with coconut oil rather then wash it. I can't see John spending that much time focused on his hair style.

Blue eyes? Probably not. Though the gene pool 3000 years ago mouth have differed from now. I know plenty of black haired, blue eyed people from say, Poland.

It may be possible that John the Baptist may have had locks. Just like today, it's common to see Jews with a Payot (ear locks), it wouldn't be a stretch to see them with locs all over the head. Some translations of the Bible even refer to people as having locs or have regulations against cutting locs, but that word could also mean braids. Also, devout men who made oaths to God were required not to cut their hair or locs, so if John the Baptist made such an oath, locs could be very possible.

Hi chuck,

Dreads? I don't know about that. I don't think that historically we understand Jews 2,000 years ago were unkempt, however, John was a special case. The Scriptures describe him as being rather a loner with a tunic made of camel's hair and eating merely from the bounty of the region around the Jordan where he baptized many.

I don't think it's a major stretch of the imagination that he may not have had more than his fingers to run through his hair and as far as the length of his hair, well, I'm hard pressed to think where he might have had it shorn. Perhaps he did from time to time wander into a village and have his hair cut, but that would be just as much a guess as knowing that he didn't. I rather imagine, and that's really the best that any of us can do, that his hair was long and he was bearded, but I'm not convinced that any of that would then mean he would have dreadlocks. Being near the river, I can see that he would have had scraggy hair, but dreadlocks, as far as I know, come from very long term lack of combing out and basic caring for one's hair.

God bless you.
IN Christ, Ted

Well I don't care how the people look that play the characters as long as they do their best to be as accurate as possible. For instince, in The Passion Of The Christ, Mary Magdelene's actress was an agnostic but she played her character passionately. Additionally, Satan was a female atheist whom was lesbian. They all played their parts well.

John, or Yohanan as his mother called him, was a nazirite from birth. Remember the Vow of the Nazir, or nazirite, required one couldn't cut his hair, nor shave his beard, drink wine, or any similar drink, eat any produce from the grape vine, nor come in contact with a dead body.

Now, to answer your question: A nazir would traditionally dreadlock his, or her, hair during biblical times, as well as today. I'm a nazir, not from birth, but from a personal decision to vow a life of consecration to Yah. The Bible says in Numbers 6:1-5 (ESV):

'And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When either a man or a woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to the Lord, 3 he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink. He shall drink no vinegar made from wine or strong drink and shall not drink any juice of grapes or eat grapes, fresh or dried. 4 All the days of his separation he shall eat nothing that is produced by the grapevine, not even the seeds or the skins. 5 “All the days of his vow of separation, no razor shall touch his head. Until the time is completed for which he separates himself to the Lord, he shall be holy. He shall let the locks of hair of his head grow long."'

To get a picture of what a nazir looked like in biblical times, just look at the most famous nazir of all time: Samson. Judges 16:13 gives us a good picture: "Then Delilah said to Samson, “Until now you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me how you might be bound.” And he said to her, “If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web and fasten it tight with the pin, then I shall become weak and be like any other man.”

Samson wore his hair in seven dreadlocks, according to Jewish history. The rastafarians got their dreadlock practices from the nazir.

Yeshua's (Jesus') brother, Yakov, or James, is said to have been a nazir, as well. It's said that his dreadlocks reached his ankles.

You should try not to judge biblical times through modern 'lenses'. Short hair on men is a pretty recent thing. Long hair on men isn't feminine. Your hair will grow long naturally if you stop cutting it. What looks feminine on a man is a face with no beard. Long hair? Please. If God wanted your hair short, He would've made it stop growing at a certain length. Look in the Bible; every reference about cutting your hair has to do with shame, mourning, etc.

That vow applies to every Christian, by the way. He says, "Speak unto the children of Israel". If you were born again, you were grafted in, according to Romans 11.

I wasn't very happy with the min-series.. How is it that Samson, who was descended from Adam, Seth, and Noah etc, was suddenly black??? Then, it skipped over 1500 years of biblical history to get to the Hollywood version of Jesus. A little tidbit that is interesting, the wood of the holly tree was at one time used in the making of wizards wands and witches staves. How fitting, I wouldn't trust any of that show to be accurate by any means. I think its shows like this that take us away from understanding the truth. Wouldn't it be better to read, and discuss it than base your beliefs off of a TV show? I know most here wouldn't dare do that, but what about those that are still lost? Perhaps there are a few who think, 'well the TV said this about the bible, so it must be factual.. afterall, its on the history channel' lol. Just a thought

What's is wrong with him being black? If Jesus can be white then Samson can certainly be black.

As for John the Baptist.

The dude wore camels hair and survived on locust and wild honey. I seriously doubt he cared about his hair AT ALL. I think he had massive dreads and possibly a matching beard.

How is that even possible, considering that everyone of importance in scripture descended from Jacob the man who was named Israel by God. That would be like saying that two white parents can have a black child or vice versa. It doesn't happen, ever...at all. It is called an impossibility.

I agree, John the Baptist probably looked like a caveman. But, he too was descended from the same man. So here again, you have a biased argument and attempt to accuse me of something I am not.

All I was saying is, if you want Samson to be black, then Jesus has to be black along with everyone else. God didn't design the races to beget a different type of human. Each creature bears its own seed within itself. Kind after kind... where does your logic come from?
