I know some on this forum eat 'biblically kosher' (although that's a misnomer) and eat the standard offerings of 'turkey bacon'.

I came across a great substitute a couple years ago called 'FACON' that is Kosher. Sadly the place that I was getting it went out of business and it became hard to find. It was also pretty pricey and the package was a small amount. Needless to say I saved it for special occasions.

upload_2018-8-9_7-21-46.png

Even now at Jacks Gourmet it's sold out. But if it does come back, here's the link.

It's got a lot going for it, it's made from cured beef plate steak.
There are no fillers, no MSG, NO Gluten, no artificial Flavors
And it's Glatt kosher.

That said although It wasn't bad and hubby loved it I think I've found a great replacement.

Some of you are familiar with the Kosher brand of Turkey and Chicken, Called Empire? It's located near me but I think if you're on the East coast it is available.

They (finally!) came up with some Turkey bacon that is really good. It also comes in a package with quite a few slices. It's crispy and not as fatty as the facon. Nice thin slices and you can cook up the whole package, use what you need and store in the fridge for a week or so to add to things like soup, a BLT, anything really. I scooped up about 4 packages because my local store hates me, as soon as I find a 'favorite' thing they discontinue it. :sigh:

Turkey Bacon is the first kosher & natural* turkey bacon!

I've seen it sold in a variety of supermarket chains so check your local!

Keeping kosher can be delicious!

I have seen some kosher "beef bacon" on some of the online kosher butchers, but I have not had a chance to try any of it...I think kosher turkey bacon is the way to go for a substitute bacon. I like turkey bacon too!

Lulav, I thought "kosher bacon" was an oxymoron. :) Thanks for the info... we have friends that kosher kill (minus the rabbi... but the standards are the same) their own animals and make a beef bacon that is better than any I have ever had. Amazing stuff!

That's great Ken, so I guess you have a limitless supply?

Truthfully I think the appeal of bacon itself is mainly the salt, fat and smoke. Put that on just about anything and you get the same sensation.

Personally I think the turkey is closer to the 'real' bacon whereas the beef doesn't quite have the same texture.

When I was growing up (my maternal grandmother a Jewish convert) they didn't eat pork but my Grandfather (gentile) like his boiled ham for sandwiches and Bacon for breakfast. Bacon was bacon, not pork if you get my meaning, just like some Jews teach that shrimp with cocktail sauce on it is Kosher.

Now I'm wishing I could find some kosher chicken livers, haven't had Rumaki in a very long time! :)

I take it exactly opposite of that. Turkey does not crisp up the same.

How do you all know what real bacon tastes like, to enable you to compare it?

(asks someone who doesn't eat pig meat)
I only started trying to keep kosher (at least as much as possible) around a year ago.

I grew up eating lots of pork products, including bacon.

I take it exactly opposite of that. Turkey does not crisp up the same.

If you add some vegetable oil and “deep fry” it turkey bacon will crisp up and have a closer texture to regular bacon. But then, you are increasing the fat by a little bit.

Maybe other brands like Jenn-o or something like that. I fried up a pack and even after the leftovers sat in a baggie for days in my fridge it was still crispy and I could break it up to put in a quiche. :)

And that's a chef talking!
No seriously aJ, have you tried it? It really gets crispy, this kind anyway. I don't think I ever tried the unkosher kind of turkey.

Yep, and it was Jenny-O. I don’t know if it would work for the beef version though.

beef bacon is pretty good (my wife just bought some the other week for the first time), the meatless ones are not that great IMO.

Are you speaking of the Facon? I haven't been able to get that but hubby is happy with the Kosher Empire Turkey bacon and it's less expensive and more for the money. The beef kind is mostly fat.

LOL!! I had a Jewish boss---he was not always "kosher." One day he bought us pizza--it had pepperoni on it, and he was eating a piece. I said--" You aren't supposed to be eating pork!" He said, "This pepperoni is kosher." I said---"There is no such thing!!"---"Yes, there is! It comes from circumcised pigs!!" I nearly fell off my chair laughing.

Many Jews do not keep Kosher. I once heard that a Jewish man was taught in his family that eating shrimp was Kosher if you had cocktail sauce on it.

Some just shrug at G-ds rules thinking they are to hurt them and not help them and be in G-ds Will.
