Is it a sin to watch pro wrestling?

I have been watching pro wrestling since I could remember. Nowadays it has had less objectionable content and I am okay with that. The overall wrestling is solid but they could tone down on some of the lack of humor and they could give the women in the WWE more than 5 minutes per show. But that is just my opinion. It is more kid-friendly than it was even 10 years ago and I for one think it is a good thing. If the WWE were to have the profanity-laced, overtly-violent, gratuitously sexual Attitude Era of the 90s-early 2000s, it would be quite boring. Anyways, is watching pro wrestling a sin? It is staged entertainment, not fake, but choreographed. Is it similar to watching basketball, which is not sinful in itself? Is it a sin to watch pro wrestling or any sport where the outcomes are not predetermined? It is one of the few things that I watch on television.

Anything of the world like that is a sin to watch because Jesus has called us to not be of the world.

"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them." 1 John 2:15

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2

If I were to buy a nice shirt for church, is that a sin? If I were to buy a gilded Bible instead of a plain one, would that be a sin?

I'm not sure about the depth of this verse. I understand that it is to do with covetousness and the lust of the eyes.

What about watching the Olympics?

This interests me and I can't seem to find an explanation.

As in most things, it all depends on the degree by which a specific form of entertainment is adored. If all things take a back seat to a particular TV show or sporting event or Hollywood movie then our lives border on idolatry. It's a matter of perspective and may or may not be a salvific issue. Our perspective might change if we take the following verses to heart:

1 Thessalonians 5:17, "Pray without ceasing."

Ephesians 6:18, "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;"

Mark 13:33, "Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is."

Luke 12:40, "Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not."

Luke 21:34, "And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares."

Ecclesiastes 9:12, "For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them."

In other words, be not easily distracted by the cares of this world and the "smoke & mirrors" offered by it. Satan is a master deceiver and loves nothing more than to distract us from the presence of God.

Matthew 6:33, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Tell me how watching a show with bad language, sexual content, and a person who proclaimed to be God (CM Punk) is not a sin to watch. It is an abomination to watch such things, that is why I stopped watching recently is the Holy Spirit convicted me.

Do you watch any secular TV, or listen to any secular music, or read secular books?

That has been a burning question for many years. One could look at it in many different ways and I suppose you could find sin in almost anything if you look hard enough. I mention in my book that Years ago my father told me that when neck ties came into fashion it was seen as from the devil and a sin to even think of wearing one. Later it was seen as a sign of disrespect if one went to church without a neck tie. So... What is sin?

I say this: Anything that takes you away from the presence of God and or His plan for your life is sin.

I am a huge wrestling fan and one thing you have to remember is that is meant to be over the top and some wrestlers say things to get a crowd reaction. So when a wrestlers says that he is a wrestling god, then they are saying it to get crowd to react to what he said. If you don't boo him for saying something like that, then something is wrong.

Seems to be the going rate for every sport or pastime. After all, the particular act has characters designed, as you said, to make each crowd act positively or negatively. We can remember that one gent adopting the moniker Austin 3:16 in a mockery of John 3:16, and that ended up not working too well for his career.

Well actually he mocking people who bring signs to sporting events that simply said John 3:16. I certainly agree that people bringing those sorts of signs do deserve that, since it is not really the best place to do that, but Austin 3:16 says "I just stomped your ***". It was his catch cry of saying that he was dangerous. The main problem with his career was a neck injury he sustained much earlier than adopting this.

I haven't watched it since the early 2000's. It was a combination of the vulgarity, and the fact that it's a travelling circus. UFC and other MMA leagues, that's real fighting. I do watch that.

I was dismayed at that time that it had grown so much in terms of vulgarity. The bits and peices of it that I remember from watching it in the 80's were not like that at all. I hope you're right about it being less vulgar these days, but I don't think we're going to return to the era of the WWF saturday morning cartoon.
