Boy there is a lot of material on these boards. I did some digging but all I got was tons of results for other topics. Here is what I am looking for.

Some time ago I heard a sermon about how the Lord has a special place in his heart for single Mothers. The sermon referenced MANY places in the Bible where there are concrete examples of this.

The verses were not limited to the New Testament either.

I did some searches on Topical Sermons but all I found were a whole bunch of messsages for Mother's Day.

Does anyone have a list of verses I could use in this way......or a sermon online that utilizes this as the main topic?

I have an unwed mother that I think needs some encouragment.

I do not know her stand on Salvation. I am hoping this is a bridge.

ooooo.....that's interesting!!

I would like to know about the sermon, too!

Lord knows, one of the toughest jobs in life is to be a mother..... and twice as tough, when you're doing it all by yourself, with absolutely zero support.

I used to be married.......but I don't think God thought he was the right person for me. :p

Hi ick, I'm a single mom also. It can be hard, but rewarding, and really it's not half as bad as it's made to be, at least for me it's not lol.

I don't know of any specifically or what you're looking for but how about this:

http://www.hope4singlemoms.com/

Psalms and Proverbs have great encouraging verses. Also check out these sites:

God bless you for wanting to help and encourage her.

hm... the only instances i can think for single mothers in the Bible was Timothy's mother and The widow Elijah was sent to in first Kings 17. There's also good reason to believe Mary was widowed by the time Christ was crucified.

I think its safe to say God does care for the single mothers. Much of the OT laws were designed in order to take care of people who had fallen into hard times. God is a God of love so that certainly makes sense :)

Might want to post on the Christian Advice forum. Some very helpful people on there with a firm grasp of scripture.

Those Biblical examples were exactly what I am looking for.

I recall during the sermon reading a verse where "Christ looked uppon her with compassion as a single mother" was the gist of the verse. The sermon showed how the Lord has a special place in his heart for the hardships of being a single parent.

Ugh, if I could only find it. I will try to find verses around Hagar...but I don't think that was the story. I recall it being in the New Testament.....and mentioning Christ's compassion in particular.

I am not familiar with any references to Timothy's Mother. Where is that from?
its more implied than anything else so it may not have been a great passage to bring up but Paul refers to Timothy's mother and grandmother as having been the ones that raised him and instructed him in the faith. Had there been a father around it would have been likely that Paul would've made mention of him instead:

3 I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. 6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. - 2 tim:3-7

Here is what I have so far:

Single Mothers and Fatherless Children

Outline
Introduction
Special Protection for them
Special judgment for those that do wrong against
Lord will preserve them, trust in the Lord
There are Special Blessings for them
The Lord can serve as Father
Old Testament Command
New Testament Command
Specific Examples:

Introduction
God talks quite a bit about fatherless children in the Bible. Since there is such a focus on these special children and their unique circumstances, it is clear that the Lord has a special place in his heart for the fatherless children…and therefore a special place in his heart for their Mothers.

Special Protection for them and
Special judgment for those that do wrong against
There is both special protections for the widow and Fatherless child (and thereby Mothers of fatherless children) and special judgment against those that do wrong to a fatherless children. Therefore this applies to single Mother as well.

Exodus 22:21 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
Exodus 22:22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child.

Comments on this verse from Clarke:
Exodus 22:22 - Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child - It is remarkable that offenses against this law are not left to the discretion of the judges to be punished; God reserves the punishment to himself, and by this he strongly shows his abhorrence of the crime. It is no common crime, and shall not be punished in a common way; the wrath of God shall wax hot against him who in any wise afflicts or wrongs a widow or a fatherless child: and we may rest assured that he who helps either does a service highly acceptable in the sight of God.

Lord will preserve them, trust in the Lord
Jeremiah 49:10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbors, and he is not.
Jeremiah 49:11 Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.

Comments on this verse from Clarke:
Jeremiah 49:11 -
Leave thy fatherless children - The connection of this with the context is not easy to be discerned; but, as a general maxim, it is of great importance. Widows and orphans are the peculiar care of God. He is as the best of fathers to the one, and the most loving of husbands to the other. Even the widows and orphans of Esau, who escape the general destruction, shall be taken care of by the Lord.

There are Special Blessings for them
Other verses of encouragement for the widow and the Fatherless (and thereby single Mothers)

Blessings (There are a lot of these in the Bible. Search for Fatherless)
Deuteronomy 14:29 And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.

Psalm 146:9 The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.

The Lord can serve as Father
The Lord will be a greater “Father” anyhow
Psalms 68:5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

Old Testament Command
Clearly a function of the Old Testament was for a focus to help the fatherless, and thereby help single Mothers.
Psalms 82:3 Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

New Testament Command
This verse is for the believers in Christ. The Saved. These verses are particularly poinyant as to the purity of our heart. Note that this very strong passage ends with a striking command in verse 27.
James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
James 1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
James 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
Clearly the Lord has a very special place in his heart for fatherless children and their mothers. So important is this particular topic that he has a particular message for his believers.
