What about if an implanted device saved a kidnapped kid's life....would you get one for your kids?

I guess the argument would be that the kidnappers would start cutting them out of kids so it would be better not to have one.

Yep. They're going to keep a registry of implanted devices for information-keeping purposes. Get some better information about how effective they are, how to make them better, that sort of stuff. Plus, the registry will come in handy when we start the inevitable purges and want to get rid of all the grandpas with pacemakers.

PS: Read the bill.
National Medical Device Registry
(1) The Secretary shall establish a national med ical device registry (in this subsection referred to as the 'registry’) to facilitate analysis of postmarket safety and outcomes data on each device that
(A) is or has been used in or on a patient; and
(B) is
(i) a class III device; or
(ii) a class II device that is implantable, life-supporting, or life-sustaining.
It then proceeds to detail how data on these devices will be collected and compiled so as to facilitate better patient safety and outcomes when dealing with these sorts of procedures.

But when you quote part of a single line out of a large document like the OP did, of course it sounds like they're going to putting RFID tags into your skull.

I wouldn't. That is how these things start. They use well meaning and good sounding arguments to slowly take away our freedoms. Truth be told, the more free I am the better I am able to provide for the safety of my family.

That said, I am not so sure we'll end up with the health care bill. If we can keep them from passing it before this November it will die as most of the bums are going to get tossed out. The only way they can get it passed is to force it.

Haha yes... these Class II implantable devices are the key to our liberal domination schemes. Stick the 'L1B3R4L Chip' in their skull, and they'll be thinking "Ah yes, Communism" in no time. Muah haha!
I knew it.

If anybody's curious what a "Class II implantable device" would be, think of something like bone cement, a hip prosthesis, an implanted cardiac monitor, or an endolymphatic shunt (used to treat a certain ear problem). Washers, nuts, and bolts that are being used to surgically repair bone damage are also listed as "Class II implantable devices". There's a lot of Class III devices that are implantable as well. A pacemaker would be a good example. For the most part if it's implantable it's usually a Class III device, but there are some Class II devices.

It actually says:
The Secretary shall establish a national medical device registry (in this subsection referred to as the ‘registry’) to facilitate analysis of postmarket safety and outcomes data on each device that is a class II device that is implantable, life-supporting, or life-sustaining.

So what it is actually saying is a list of what devices people doctors insert into people to keep them alive (pace maker) will be kept to see if they are safe are not. The only concern is what private information is to be collected on each receiver of such a device, but I highly highly doubt it will be anything more than what the government already has you thanks to the patriot act and similar ones.

This thread is an exact miniaturized model of the health care debate in general among the American population. Someone quotes a few words out of the health care bill, another person mentions something COMPLETELY UNRELATED to the health care bill, groups of people start believing in the fear mongering that the health care bill will do something that it in no way suggest, next thing you know a few people are left utterly confused at exactly how things got this messed up.

I support a general rule (not a law) that you cannot discuss any part of the health care bill in which you have not read the surrounding material for context.

If you ever see me calling something a death panel, it is because someone has already been saying that about the health care bill, and I am pointing out we already have metrics which decide who gets health care and who does not (really bad metrics), which I call death panels as that seems to understand that better than my former definition.
