Since being on CF, I have noticed some truly devoted Christians. What has gradually impressed me is that many of you are really in love. How would you describe your relationship with God? Is it similar to a marriage? Honeymoon like and giddy at first, growing into a mature adult relationship? Or just as a content, obedient servant to the Lord?
How would you cope with separation or divorce? (you don't have to answer)

Thank God, He's always on my mind, I'm in a constant prayer.

For all I suppose is safe to say we are on the same course, ‘till Christ be formed within’ me. Now for those who want to inspect the specific stage of development one has attained somewhere between novice and pillar, you ask a hard - nonetheless worthwhile question, yet beckons another; if there are individuals whom the Lord knows have entered true development, would he indeed be able to boast (or inform) above the humility required? But then again, as the Master did inform us, those who did enter are also those who are able to bridle the humility enough to instruct others in the way also. Otherwise, the humility itself would wither under ambition.

"Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
(Matthew 5:19)

So then, if the development of His strength resides, isn’t the sufficiency He provides unmeasurable?

“And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”
(2 Corinthians 12:9)

My goodness what a question...

My relationship with Him has most certainly progressed past the Honeymoon stage. In fact, it has passed through the "first year" phase, where we had a few tiffs. But, as crazy as it might sound, He actually honored me in what I was quite frankly demanding of Him in our relationship, and ever since that time we have become so close that the "intimate time" is almost seamless. Like I said, quite the question, but without wanting to become too graphic, He and I can pretty much "get it on" anywhere, anytime, anyplace. I simply know to separate myself out to some place secluded to hear Him. If I'm with company, politely excuse myself to take a walk outside. If I'm getting my car worked on, go sit by myself outside somewhere, away from people to pray, and listen for what He would say to me...

I absolutely love the marriage analogy, and I think it has not only tremendous theological depth, but also tremendous spiritual application. The Biblical command is to "Love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole mind, your whole soul, and your whole strength," and few seem to teach the importance of this, despite our Lord plainly telling us it was the greatest commandment of both the Old and New Testaments.

Where am I with Him now? Settled, and running like a well-oiled machine. I also seem to be becoming evermore "responsive" with each passing day. Don't make me post Trampled Under Foot to explain it.
How would you cope with separation or divorce? (you don't have to answer)

Not a chance.

I love this question, I really had to think and I ended up thinking in a polytheistic way it would seem. Even though we only believe in one God, we do have the mystery of the Holy Trinity.

I think of the one God number one as my provider in all aspects of life. God the Father is the provider and sustainer of all that exists. My relationship with him is as a literal Father but I am not an adult or a tennager, I am more like a one year old, barely able to speak or walk and look to my Father with wonder as he gives me everything I need to survive and sometimes what I ask for as a treat.

Jesus is husband (not consummated but celibate lol). He provides me with emotional support, walks with me through life and I am intimately tied to him forever. He is the head of my house, gives and teaches me how to love. He also speaks on my behalf to the Father.

The Holy Spirit is my covering (I don't know if that makes sense). The Holy Spirit provides me with the presence of God inside my body. So that I don't just outwardly worship him but experience his essence. It protects me from evil, nourishes me, encourages me, flows through me and touches others making God visible in the world,it does for me what I cannot do for myself and is like The Fathers touch, making us immortal.

Excellent question I enjoyed thinking about that and projecting the symbolism.

I believe you meant to use the word Trinitarian rather than "polytheistic," judging by the rest of your post.

I know it's Trinitarian but the way I am describing it there it seems as though I am talking about three different Gods. 30 years later and I'm still not clear and even unsure about the nature of the Trinity.

No problem. My apologies.

wow. You'd probably enjoy reading St. John of the Cross then , if you haven't already.

That's interesting. I tend to talk to God as an equal. Am I being disrespectful?

Maybe I would. I'll keep it under consideration. I'm not exactly what you'd call a voracious reader, but I do read the Ante-Nicene Fathers whenever the Spirit leads me to them for support on particular interpretations of scripture and founding Christian theology.

Thanx for the recommendation. You keep impressing me with your stuff and I'm liable to eventually start asking where you're getting it all from. Ha!

For me, Jesus is the most beautiful entity/person in existence, one for whom my response is always:

wishing, wishing
hoping, hoping
crying, crying
praying, praying
trying, trying
seeing, seeing
thanking, thanking!
....oh, God !!!

That about sums up my daily religious regimen
... while I await the flying, flying part of it.

Peace,

Been listening to Seal's version ever since I read this post. My wife will thank you. She takes exception to some of the secular stuff I like, but Seal is one artist we always loved together. She's about to hear a regular cycle of him for probably weeks to come now - liberating - thank you. <grinning>

I feel like I play several roles in my relationship with God. For example, I am the child and God is my Father. I'm the servant and God is my master. He is the King and I am part of his kingdom. To me, having a relationship with God requires me to view Him in several different roles, which gives me these roles to. However, knowing I'm God's child comforts me, knowing I'm his servant motivates me, and understanding that I'm a part of his kingdom helps me appreciate others in the kingdom of God as well. I treat God as a friend, but also as a superior. So I'll talk to Him about my life and ask Him to help me with situations, but only if HIS will allows it. I also try to thank Him regularly for all that he does for me because of how much he loves me. I feel like my relationship with God is kind of casual, like a family relationship, because I treat Him as a father and friend and that makes it easier for me to talk to Him about life.
