Read the Prophets in the Old Testament, the calling would look A LOT like that. Lots of rejection from those who you'd think would support you, as Jesus said a prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and family. But the calling itself? You would just know, God would speak to you in a way that you'd not mistake it otherwise. Dreams, visions, the voice. Do you think youve been called?

How can a person know if they are called to be a prophet?

How does God call prophets?

What does a divine call to be a prophet look like?
The first thing you must do is seek the kingdom. This is most important. Remember that Christ foretold of many who would declare his name and say that he is Christ and yet deceive many.

Matt.6 Verses 32 to 33

  1. [32] (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
[33] But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Matt.24
  1. [5] For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
  2. please don’t misinterpret verse 32 in Mathew above having to do with seeking to be a prophet. It pertains to the daily needs we all have.

Encourage those who believe God is beginning to use them in this way, to submit what they're hearing to a more seasoned team. It helps when church leadership is supportive since one of their responsibilities is to equip the saints. (Eph 4). Learn and follow the individual church's procedure. Then "Let two or three prophets speak [as inspired by the Holy Spirit], while the rest pay attention and weigh carefully what is said." This doesn't indicate an automatic stamp system.

There is a process.

"Despise not prophesyings.

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." I Thess 5

So what's said prophetically is to be tested.

Some additional steps are needed to prove all things such as:
- prayer
- depending on the prophecy it may need to be checked against Scripture. Is it in line with Scripture (Acts 17:11),
-asking The Holy Spirit and hearing His voice for ourselves, confirmation (Matt 18:16; Acts 9;9-19 especially v 10-12; II Cor 13:1)
-fasting,
-spiritual discernment,
-does it point to Yeshua,
-receive G_dly counsel (Prov 11:14).

Next step "This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before concerning thee, that thou by them mightest wage a good warfare," I Tm 1:18

How can a person know if they are called to be a prophet?

How does God call prophets?

What does a divine call to be a prophet look like?

(1) The Holy Spirit will make known and confirm to a child of God that He desires to use him/her in prophetic ministry. But this kind of ministry often can take time ... time to discern, time to accept, time to be prepared and readied for ... and this work the Holy Spirit patiently and lovingly does.

While any believer can be used of God to speak a prophetic word for Him, to walk the path of a prophet ... as I believe you are asking ... takes time for God to develop within a person. It generally takes time for one to die to self and live completely surrendered to God. The true prophet of God will live in close fellowship with God, by the ongoing grace of God and the ongoing surrender to Him.

(2) God calls a prophet, by speaking to his/her heart. And by continuing to speak to the heart. The prophet may want to ignore the calling, walk away from it, even be very confused by it ... but the desire God plants in one's heart to speak for Him is not easily ignored by the heart ...

(3) The prophet of God loves God, the things of God, the things that are important to God. His/her life will reflect this love, this surrender to God in all things. The prophet of God will be a prayerful intercessor between God and man, between man and God, walking in close communion with God. Since this prayerful life is mostly lived in 'private', we usually will not 'see' it. Often we may not even know of it; this aspect of the prophet's life is more hidden.

That is how God has shown me the calling and life of a prophet. While there is more that could be said about the prophetic calling, these are the things I think most important to share, in response to your questions.

In these last of the last days ... which I believe are upon us ... I expect God is going to raise up many prophets ... to help awaken the sleeping Church, to encourage the saints, to help prepare the hearts of men for the soon coming return of the Lord ...

Yes, the Holy Spirit is capable of doing all of this.
And all that the prophet does is done in the power of the Holy Spirit.
But also, God has lovingly chosen to use man in His redemptive plan for mankind ...

Yes, when one is walking closely with God, I, too, believe they would 'just know' ... in their heart ...
and God will continue to 'confirm' ...

People need to pay attention to this.

This statement by Mourningdove is a very spot-on statement about what a prophet would expect to go through.

I would only add that a prophet will also operate frequently in certain gifts. All the revelation gifts will operate routinely, but especially the word of wisdom, which is the gift that GOD uses to foretell things. A person in training as a prophet will have dreams that are 15 to 20 years ahead of time, and they will be centered on issues that specific person will eventually deal with over the years as well as what the outcome GOD will lead that person to.

A true prophet will also be given a taste of GOD's power to be able to to know what it truly is.
